My Rio says upgrader when I turn it on

I just put on some new songs and all was working fine.. when all of a sudden it won't turn on and it says upgrader on the screen. When I plug it into the computer I believe it says Rio in safe mode. Any suggestions on what I should do.. I am trying at the moment leaving the battery out for 20mins and seeing if that helps.. but so far nothing has worked.

UPGRADER is a mode that purges the firmware from the Rio player prior to flashing the unit. Firmware is basically the operating system for the player, so if it is corrupted any number of things can occur. You can enter UPGRADER mode to update the firmware on your player by holding down the MENU button when you power the Rio ON. Flashing the player in this mode erases all content. Try the following to get the unit out of UPGRADER mode, if powering OFF the unit will not correct it. ALL PLAYERS - If you accidentally entered UPGRADER mode, turn the unit OFF and then back ON again. - Download the latest version of the firmware for your player and upgrade the unit. Visit http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio - It may be necessary to run the firmware update more than once. - This process may erase content from your player. - If the player is detected by the computer, it is recommended that you format the player, which WILL erase content from the player. - Macintosh user's try flashing the player on a PC. FLASH MEMORY PLAYERS - Remove the battery and replace it, this will reset the unit. The Rio Forge, Rio se510, Rio Cali [Black Rio Stick], and Rio Chiba [Black Rio Stick] can lock up causing the player to be unresponsive. If this occurs there are two things that need to be performed to resolve the issue. First you want to remove power from the player this includes the battery and a USB connection for 20 minutes to reset the player. There is a capacitor on the player that stores a charge that holds the player in the locked state. By waiting the duration the capacitor will discharge and the player should function as normal. Second you will want to upgrade the firmware to the latest version and format the player to prevent future occurrences. HARD DISK DRIVE PLAYERS - If you have a Carbon, Nitrus, Eigen, or Karma, use a paper clip to reset the unit. Your Rio will power off automatically when it has been reset. It may be necessary to connect the player to AC power and then reset the player if it will not turn on. If you are still unable to have the player exit UPGRADER Mode, then try it on another computer. UPGRADE FIRMWARE - Connect to the internet - Go to http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/ - Click on the appropriate player - Click on the FIRMWARE tab [showing by default] - Click on the latest firmware file [example: RioForge_firmware_133.exe] - Click SAVE when prompted - From the SA

Warning Warning Warning - I take no responsibility if you melt your Rio with this solution, but it worked for me. I kept getting the UPGRADER message for my Rio Forge and would try all sorts of combinations to get it to work. Usually after about 15 minutes of fiddling with it, it would work. But then I also noticed that my Rio Forge would start after it had been in my pocket for a while. I remember reading some people's theory that the connections get weak. So, I took the memory card and battery out, and pointed the hair dryer at the insides for about 5 seconds. Now it works fine. I am so happy, I just love my little Rio player. I hope it never dies.

yea thanks bro! it totally worked. i tried all that other advice for an hour or better and it did nothing. ran the hairdryer for about half a minute and badda bing there she was back online again. must be bad engineering or assemble/solder work flaws inherent in the product kinda like the 3 rings of death Xbox 360's get or how laptops just die out of the blue never to work again but because the Rio's are so small one is able to get them hot enough to affect the solder flow and enough to re-establish the integrity of the integral connections necessary for its operation.

If your Rio upgrader message (on Rio carbon 5GB, Pearl,2.5GB etc - hard drive players only) is not fixed by the other methods posted (resetting etc) then try replacing your hard drive, with a CF card, because you have probably broken it.

Everybody says that this does not work but it definitely does!

My Rio got dropped and I completely buggered the hard drive so after reading many forums saying that it didn't work I read one that said that someone had told them that sandisk ultra II ones worked (very vague!)

Because I had nothing to lose I went out and bought a 1GB sandisk Ultra II CF card. I then took apart my rio and replaced the hard drive with the CF card. Still not thinking it was going to work I plugged it into my computer and installed the latest firmware (from the rio website) and then HEY PRESTO!!!!!! it works.

I have yet to try an 8GB ultra II card but when I do i will keep you posted.

If you don't believe me then I don't blame you but If you send me a request then I can send you pictures and more details...

Rio will live on

Please give any comments, I would love to hear them

Having trouble getting my Rio Forge to work

Mine wasn't recognising the player through the USB cable so I followed Mantraguy's instructions to reload the firmware. Make sure though that you hold down the menu key before you switch on the player. Then it shows upgrade and you can reload the firmware. Of course you will lose all the songs on the internal memory but if it isn't working anyway.

good luck

Mp3 player wont download songs

I would recommend going into 'my computer ' and going into the music folder in your Rio. If your music is in here then make sure that it is a supported format (Eg. MP3, WMA. AAC is not supported)

If it is in here and it is a supported format then try formatting it and putting the tracks on again.

If that doesn't work then try upgrading to the latest firmware.

Hope this helps,

2 probs

Press the MENU and turn it on, as soon as the word RIO shows on the screen release the power button but do not release the MENU button until it says upgrading
Plug the USB cord to it and install Rio Forge Firmware_120
Turn the mp3 off then on normally
Put the music back on your mp3 and it SHOULD be fixed. but your music will be gone..

hope this helps,

Same problem here. No amount of updates or battery removal will help. Purging, re-downloading, reformatting...all failed. I'm afraid at this point there is nothing left to do but toss it.

Rio forge 256 MB mp3 player

This happened to my player also. To fix it, you have to go to the rio website and download the most recent firmware for whatever model mp3 player you have. I went to: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?model=265&SKU=90260558) Next install. Plug in your player to your USB to your computer - BUT (and here's the important part) you need to hold down the menu key while plugging it in. Keep holding until it powers up AND the word "UPGRADER" shows on the screen. Now, run the firmware upgrade program and follow the directions and it will see your player and upgrade the firmware (yes, even if it's the same firmware version.) You'll have to run the .exe file to get the upgrades onto your player. Unplug the player and it should be like new!

The screen says "Upgrader"

Have you upgraded the software if not try that. Check your battery voltage if it reads around the 2. something voltage then you need to get that battery to its orginal capacity. I dont think you'll get your songs back. Does it have a reset button if so reset it.
