When it hums, is it running? Or does it not run when it hums? I'm assuming it runs when you say you have to turn the therm off to get the noise off.. If it's humming and not running, you have big problemo friend..

Why does my PTHP. shut off and switch to electric resistance heat?

im guessing its there way of defrosting the coils , as with this type (small) its tough to defrost the coils in an efficient way , hp runs normal to within one or two degrees of setpoint , hp shuts off or reverses in low speed , back up heat comes on to complete the room heat and to generate the heat needed to defrost the coils , entire unit shuts off when set point is reached , reversing valves set for heat and wait till next cycle

now mine does something slightly different : it runs for fifteen minutes and if set point is not reached it switches to back up and reverses the coils ,leaves compressor on (low speed) , this heats the coils up and defrosts the outdoor unit , and if it runs long enough twenty minutes total time , it goes back to normal and aux heat shuts off . this drives me insane thinking how much im spending on heating the outside !! but im sure its needed to prevent ice build up on outdoor coils ,and I sure don't want that cracking with ice formations

How a Central Air Conditioning System Works
amn_howac.jpg

Facts:
  • The typical central air conditioning system is a split system, with an outdoor air conditioning, or "compressor bearing unit" and an indoor coil, which is usually installed on top of the furnace in the home.
  • Using electricity as its power source, the compressor pumps refrigerant through the system to gather heat and moisture from indoors and remove it from the home.
  • Heat and moisture are removed from the home when warm air from inside the home is blown over the cooled indoor coil. The heat in the air transfers to the coil, thereby "cooling" the air.
  • The heat that has transferred to the coil is then "pumped" to the exterior of the home, while the cooled air is pumped back inside, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
  • Central air conditioning can also be provided through a package unit or a heat pump.

Benefits:
  • Indoor comfort during warm weather - Central air conditioning helps keep your home cool and reduces humidity levels.
  • Cleaner air - As your central air conditioning system draws air out of various rooms in the house through return air ducts, the air is pulled through an air filter, which removes airborne particles such as dust and lint. Sophisticated filters may remove microscopic pollutants, as well. The filtered air is then routed to air supply ductwork that carries it back to rooms.
  • Quieter operation - Because the compressor bearing unit is located outside the home, the indoor noise level from its operation is much lower than that of a free-standing air conditioning unit.

Heater, ac and fan speeds all working fine. Compressor not kicking in...just auxiliary heat working.

Outside temp too low, so outside thermostat and it's settings will not allow the heat pump to work. But insist on the ausilary heat to work instead. Heat pumps usually do not produce enough heat when below 40F outside temp. If you have Gas heat, it may be more economical than the heat pump below 40F. If electric auxilarry heat, it may compete at 32F. Talk to your dealer, installer, or manufacture.

Heat pump compressor wont come on in heat mode, works fine in cool mode, we get heat occaisionally for about 2 min, then the compressor shuts off. it is a fridgedaire window unit.

Try setting the thermostat at a normal heat setting. By raising the temperature too high the unit thinks that the heat pump won't be effective and go into strip heat mode.

Hello
Sounds like the condensor fan motor is going bad.If the fan stops turning or is not turning at full speed, the compressor can not give off heat to the condensor.Which will cause it to shut down on high heat.

So i would start with a new fan motor.Your local heating and cooling supply house should have these in stock.

I need help with a buzzing sound in my air conditioner.

It is probably the compressor humming. They can make some funny noises especially on start for a while. If the unit is not cooling it may be the start capacitor or the comressor may be locked up.

No cold air coming from the registers.

If your compressor is running outside (low hum noise) then your probably need freon .If the compressor is not running could be a bad cap or bad compressor

Heat Pump hums, clicks and does not come on sometimes

yes the start capasitor starts the fan motor and the contactor pulls together when the t-stat tells it to start and it has a spring in it that gets week , some brands of units have a delay in the outside units board to stop it from starting at the exact same time as the airhandler
