My HP PSC 500 won't copy in black and white

I'm making copies of a cookbook and it will not print them in black and white. Is there a setting where I can change color into black and white?

SOURCE: Very slow printing & copying

I shut off the computer for about 1 hour, and when I turned it on, it printed and copied at the speed it is designed to do.

SOURCE: my hp psc 2410 photosmart printer will not print - only copy

Check to make sure your PSC 2410 is in fact the default printer. If it is, make sure your cable is firmly plugged in to your printer and CPU. Clear the print queue. Turn off and restart printer. I have found that your problem is basically a communication problem between the computer and printer. Also check www.hp.com. Good luck.

SOURCE: Cant print black or do black and white copies

He's not saying that the black cartridge won't print (which would warrant cleaning the heads, or messing with the cartridges) -- I have the same problem that MarkDan is having as well... no matter what you select as the output from any "Print" dialog window, the HP 21xx and 12xx series printers _always_ print in full color. You can choose Black and White, Greyscale, Color -- doesn't matter what you choose in the dialog boxes, it utterly ignores you, and will always print in color.
I have no idea why it does this, but it's eating a _ton_ of color ink for no good reason. I have searched all over the Web and on HP's site, but solution has been found.

SOURCE: I just got a hp photosmart c4480 printer and it makes black and white copies, but I can't figure out how to print in black and white like when I am on a web site.

When you tell it to print, especially if you are printing a web page or something else in color that you want in B&W, don't hit the print icon. Instead choose 'file' 'print' and a screen should pop up with options. Choose properties,or page setup and you should find options for printing in color, grayscale, B&W etc.

HP psc 1410 all scans and copies are a total black

Yes, either the lamp or photo sensors in the scan assembly. You need a torx driver to remove the top and back covers and check that all ribbon cables are plugged in fully, sometimes a poor connection can cause that problem.

Scanned Items or Copies all print in Solid Black

I assume that you mean color images are being produced in black and white. If that's the case, there's a document on the HP web site that shows you what to look for and provides solutions:

Color Image Prints in Black and White

Good luck.

Photocopying

According to " HP Officejet R, PSC 500 and Color Copier - General Copying Issues and Solutions", under the problem heading "Black is not Black", notes that:

"The unit will perform mono (or black) copies using the color cartridge to create a composite black in Normal and Best modes. This is necessary to create the correct grayscale shades. NOTE: The HP PSC 500 all-in-one product cannot perform black copies. Scan the image in and print it out in greyscale.

The color cartridge may be out of one color of ink. Run a self-test page to verify that all the colors are there. Replace the cartridge if they are not."

In other words, the device only uses the black ink cartridge when used as a computer printer. When used as a stand-alone copier, it uses the color ink cartridge, and all three ink colors must be present and working to give a black and white copy. Perhaps you can refill the color cartridge with black ink in all chambers?
