Why does my baumatic fridge/freezer keep getting iced up

The drain hole at the back gets iced up every day and the water spills into the bottom of the fridge. The back of the fridge behind the salad drawer also gets iced up.

  • Heather elson Sep 16, 2013

Just do not buy a Baumatic so called 'frost' free fridge/freezer as they are rubbish. They ice up everyday. Have to leave mine open everyday to get rid of the ice.

Honestly, it really sounds like your problem in the drain is blocked and is overflowing causing a nightmare. I'm assuming it starts just at the bottom of the back wall just around the first set of drawers. There is a kit that they make that actually resolves this issue. Unfortunatly, after looking it up they actually discontinued that part for your model. Not to worry, I'll tell you how to build on. You'll want to remove the drawers and the shelfs and the back wall. For maximun ease I recommend turning the machine off for a day or two and letting everything thaw out. Once the back is off locate the defrost heater. It will run along the bottom of the evaporator. Now, find the drain hole in the trough below the heater area. Once you;ve done that find an aluminum can and good pair of scissors. Cut a strip that can fit down the drain hole, but not to small or too big. Be sure to make it a decent length. Take one end and sort of wrap it around the defrost heater directly above the drain hole then have the rest of the strip go into the drain. How this works is everytime the machine goes into defrost, this ice will melt and the water will fall to the trough where it will go to the drain. The bad thing is hot water actually freezes faster than cold, but with the aluminum improvised drain heater, heat from the element above will pass downward to the aluminum keeping the water warm enough to not freeze as it goes down the drain and finally out of the machine. Your problem will be a thing of the past. Good luck

SOURCE: Water colecting on floor of freezer in

The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex. Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable. We suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs.

SOURCE: maytag fridge water dripping from inside freezer side

This sounds like the evaporator drain may be clogged either in the freexer compartment or at the outlet to the drain pan under the unit. Every defrost cycle the defrost element makes water by melting the ice on the evaporator coils. If the drain is clogged there is no other place for the ice to go. Many times the drain may just have ice buildup in the evaporator drain funnel that can be corrected with a manual defrosting.

To do this manual defrosting all you do is first unplug the unit then remove everything from the freezer compartment. After that place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a little over 2 hours. Please NOTE this will make more of that pesky water mess so be ready to tend to the mess as it presents itself.

After the 2 hour fan session plug the unit back in and reload the freezer compartment with previous content. Monitor for the possibility of the water manifeting itself again.

In addidtion to the above there is a drain pan catch basin in the bottom of the unit near the compressor. They are usually white plastic on Maytag units and not to rugged. Make sure that the drain pan is not loaded with debris. There is about a 1/2 inch diameter opaque plastic line that drains into the catch basin. That is the Evaporator darin tube. Ensure the very end of the tube does not have caked up debris in the very end of the tube. Sometimes this tube cakes up and then the debris dries hard inside the tube near the end. Make sure the tube is free of foreign objects and clean.

After all of the above / cleaning and clearing / manual defrosting it is still making water then most likely the lower panel under the defrosting element / evaporator may have become disconnected allowing defrost cycle water from the melted ice into the freezer compartment vs exit via the drain. To fix the disconnected power metal panel problem the rear freezer panel would have to removed to re-attach / repair the metal panel that guides the water into the evaporator drain.

SOURCE: I have a zanussi ZI 920/9K and the fridge has

two solutions
1...a door seal leak
2...you are puting food in that is warm or not covered and its the condensation from these that collects on the shinny surface of the salad drawer.....
remember, every time you open the door warm air from the kitchen replaces the cold air inside the fridge,it does not dry the air like a dehumidifier....
hence water droplets gather.....

My Bosch KGU3420GB fridge freezer keeps getting a thick layer of ice in the bottom of the freezer which then 'welds' itself to the bottom freezer draw. Any idea how to fix this?

Sounds like the drain is blocked and defrost water is collecting in the base. Try a full defrost and check the drain hole clears.
tip

Water leaking into or out of freezer on to floor

This is a very common problem on many older side by side and top mount refrigerators. Basically what happens is this, your fridge goes into defrost every so many hours and a heater comes on melting all the ice off its evaporater(cold coils). Once the ice melts off the coils the unit can then start cooling again with a freshly cleaned coil till it goes into defrost again some hours later. Now the water left from the melted ice during this defrost process has to go somewhere, it cant just build up in the freezers back wall. What manufacturers do is make a hole under the heater with a hose that will run through to the bottom of your refrigerator and empty into its drain pan underneath. Sometimes something can break loose in the back of the refrigerator and fall into this drain hole but more often it becomes clogged with mildew, mold, or some form of bacteria. Once the line is blocked the water cannot drain to the pan any longer and will fill over spilling into the freezer and may eventually build to where it is coming out the door seal itself. If the bottom of your freezer keeps getting a layer of ice in it, the best place to start is looking at the drain hole.
Tools you will/may need to repair this yourself are as follows.
*phillips screwdriver
*1/4 inch nut driver
*turkey baster
*bowl large enough to hold a liter or more
*bleach
*one or two large towels
Step one unplug the refrigerator. UNPLUG IT.
Step two is prep, lay the towels out to try to minimize any water that might spill out onto the floor.
Step three open the freezer door and remove all the food between you and the rear wall of the freezer along with most of the shelving. If you are working on a top mount all food and shelves need to be removed. On a side by side you need to remove the food and shelves starting at the bottom and going up until you see the top of the rear access panel because this panel is what will need to be removed.
Step four identify the screws in the rear wall holding the panel in place and remove them. In a top mount this is the entire back wall panel. Then pull the panel itself out carefully. The panel can flex but try to minimize it so you don't end up with creases in the panel.
Step five go to the tap and get the water as hot as possible then fill the bowl and head back to the fridge.
Step six with the panel removed you may be able to see the problem drain hole but most times it is covered with ice and not yet visible. You will be able to find it easily because it is dead center of the coils and straight down. There are some variations but almost all are set pretty centered under the coils. Take your baster and load it with water and start blasting downwards where the drain hole is. Keep reloading and shooting till the drain hole is visible. Do not stop there though, now aim your baster directly down into the drain hole and keep shooting till you have cleared the line and all the water begins running down through the hole.
Step seven once cleared take some bleach and mix it with some of the water and inject it into the drain hole. This will kill any bacteria or mold that is in the line or down in the bottom pan.
Step eight just clean up all the ice chunks left and dry up any water left in the freezer bottom. Put the panel back in place and tighten the screws. Put all the shelves and food back into the unit and turn it back on. Job well done.

Frigidiare PLHS39EESS9 Ice build up in bottom of Freezer

I had the same problem with my Jenn-air side-by-side

Your freezer has a defrost cycle and when the freezer temp is set too cold, your drainage pan and tube freezes up (behind the back panels in the freezer) and when that gets full it spills over too the bottom of the fridge and keeps building up until you notice.
  • Un-plug fridge and put your food in coolers or another fridge.
  • Defrost the freezer, remove the ice from the bottom.
  • Remove the back panel/s (in the freezer).
  • Check the drainage pan. If it is iced up, you'll have to carefully remove the ice and check the drainage hole.
  • If the hole is iced up, so is the first 1-2 inches of the plastic tube leading to the main drainage pan behind and under the fridge.
  • You can use a hair drier to speed up defrost.
  • To defrost the hole and tube I used round ended metal (nut pics or beater attachment ends- avoid sharp objects) heated up in boiling water and gently forced down into the hole and tube until defrosted.
  • Check flow(by pouring warm water) down and looking behind and under fridge(with flashlight) to see if flowing into main drainage pan.
  • Turn up your freezer temp and check with a thermometer. Your freezer temp was probably set too cold
Mine is going on 5 months with no problem. If this continues, it might be the defroster.
Good Luck!

Ice build up in bottom of freezer

Check the ice maker. sometimes they get cracked a will leak water into the freezer compartment. Also check the ice maker fill tube for leaks or someone could have spilled something. Although this is tipical of a clogged drain. What happens is when the fridge go into derfost, it will melt all the frost that is on the evaporator, turning it into water. The water drains down to a trough under the evaporator and down a drain hole in the trough ( this trough is behind the evaporator cover ) Removing the melted frost from the freezer. If that drain is clogged, the water cannot leave the freezer. Then when the fridge starts back up ,it will freez the water that was not drained. After repeated defrosting the water will fill this trough and run off into the bottom of the freezer to be frozzen when the fridge starts to cool again.

Water in bottom of fridge

Thanks to all who spent money or shared their experience to have somebody do this repair, and I really mean it.
I have a Whirlpool TopLoad Fridge (not a side by side).
Things you'll need
30 minutes
Small socket for cardboard panel on lower back and panel inside freezer
Bicycle Pump
4 Towels
Hair Dryer

1. Take everything out of freezer
2. Turn dials off in fridge for both compartments
3. Pull fridge out so you can get behind it and unplug it
4. Be vigilant of ice maker line if installed
5. Pull cardboard panel off on back
On the left side you should see the back of the skinny drip pan and a small line. That line goes from the freezer and is most likely clogged.
6. Blow dry the back of the freezer enough so the ice is thawed at the bottom of the back panel.
7. Remove the two screws on the back panel. You may just be able to pull it toward you enough to get behind it. You'll see the coils and fan, and underneath these you may see some ice sheets and there should be a hole. That is the drain line that is clogged. I heated up some water and poured it over the drain to thaw the line. You may want to remove the crisper drawers and put some towels down there to catch the overflow. Once the ice is thawed enough at the drain. Go to the back of the fridge and place the end of the bicycle pump at the bottom of the drain hose. Apply pressure to get a good seal but keep pumping. You may have to go back and forth between pumping and thawing, but you'll know it is clear when you hear air going into the freezer and then the wonderful moment when water drips into the drip pan as advertised!

Keep those fridges less full so that the door stays sealed and keep the seal clean and also keep your doors from having too much stuff so the weight of the door doesn't pull away.

Okay, put it back together, turn everything on and be careful of your cord and lines when pushing the fridge back. Thank the Lord ours has wheels and man,was it cruddy underneath. Vacuum those coils underneath the fridge too for proper air circulation.

Blessings to you!

Maytag side by side, bottom freezer compartment had daily ice build up

I had the same problem with mine a couple of months ago. There is a drain which gets plugged. You have to remove the contents of your freezer, and then look at the back area of the freezer. The panel that's on the back is removable. Once it's removed, you will see a drain at the bottom. Mine was clogged up with debris, and was covered with ice. I poured warm water over the drain, soaked it up...did this a few times to melt the ice, then I worked at cleaning out the drain. Mine wasn't plugged too badly, I ended up having to blow air through the drain using my air compressor, to be positive that it was clear of debris. You could poke something down the drain, but it won't go very far because there is an elbow on the drain tube(visible on the backside of the unit itself)

If you get it cleaned out, it should be fine. Mines been great ever since I cleaned mine out...no more puddles on the floor.
