Black box in middle of screen

On certain channels, while still receiving the broadcast, a large black box appears that blocks out almost the entire screen.

I have tried going through all of the set ups, and the only thing I see that is unusual is the word "text" appearing in the lower right corner of the screen.

Note that the large black box goes away when pushing buttons on the tv (ex: the black box will disappear to show the volume setting when changing the volume on the tv but it will cover the picture and the menu display of the dtv box).

This is caused by the closed caption setting of the television set NOT the captioning of the converter box. To fix this you must open your television's menu, find the ccd/closed caption option, and turn it off. This is a frustrating problem as when most people are told to shut off the captioning they try to do so at the box.

Normal dtv box captioning will appear as a small text box at the bottom of the screen as you would expect - not as a giant black rectangle that covers most of the screen. If you do want to shut this off too you will find that you can't do it through the usual menu options (the menu will only allow changes to font, color etc.) - there should be a ccd button on the remote that when pushed will scroll through ccd-1, ccd-2,... off.

Replaced TY-LA1000 Lamp and now a black box across the picture, TV is PT-50LC14

Check in main menu (set and box if using one) under closed captions--one of the settings is TEXT--black box will appear in middle of screen and certain channels--with the remote turn text off.

Hitachi rear projection HDTV has a black box that sometimes appears in center of screen. It doesn't take up the entire screen and it dissapears when i move the volume or call up a menu, then comes back...

If it is a large box in the middle of the screen it is for TEXT. With the remote or front controls go into the customer menu and find the Closed caption option----you will most likely find that TEXT 1 is highlighted---simply select CC1 (closed caption if you want that) or if one of the choices is OFF select that.

The Text feature was built into many sets but to my knowledge never really got used---the idea was books and other things could be broadcast and read with this feature on screen.

Let me know what happens and if you have any questions reply to me here---I am here to help people.

''big black box that appears in the middle of the screen on certain channels''

It's your "closed captioning." Just turn that feature off, and you'll be good to go!

Black box blocks on certain programs

Check your closed-caption settings. You should find it's set for "text" right now. Turn it to "off" (or to "caption 1" if you want the captioning).

In text mode, the TV blanks out a portion of the screen to put up text that never shows up. You only notice on channels or programs where captioned programs are being broadcast. This is a common problem; on many remotes there's a single button to control captions and it's easy to hit it and change settings without realizing it.

Black box comes up on tv screen

The black box is a text box for closed captioning. Some stations send the signal which turns on the box while not actually broadcasting any text. Go into your setup menu and turn off closed captioning, or at least change it to a different mode. The easiest option is to restore factory presets.

Black Box on screen

By your description it sounds as though the closed captioning option has been turned on on the TV. Only certain programs are CC capable and that accounts for the box moving from channel to channel as some broadcasts are not CC CAPABLE. Go to the menu on the tv and ensure closed captioning is disabled. This should resolve the issue. If you need more help please let me know.
