No right channel audio when using HDMI connection to HDTV

I have no right channel audio when using the HDMI connection from Motorola DCT6200 cable box to my Sony HDTV. Have right channel audio on all other inputs on the Sony, including analog cable connection. How do I tell if the problem is in the Sony HDMI circuits or the Motorola HDMI circuits? (I have no other HDMI source to test with.)

Comcast came and replaced the box, although the tech seemed pretty clueless about HDMI and HDTV. But it worked. Thanks to all.

Since it is easier to replace, I would go with the cable box first. Sometimes there are software upgrades for the TV's that fix such issues but, almost all HDMI issues are with the cable box not the tv.

Call Sony as wel to make sure you have the most current version of the installed software on the TV. The usually will send a memory stick or have a technician do the update for you. Cost depends on warranty.

How do I find the right channel to set my tv on so it will receive cable tv

If it is a cable box and you are connecting via coaxial cable using the rf converter in the box it is usually channel 3-4 but it can often be switched. If it is a satellite box it may use a high channel number like 73. Keep in mind that there is a traditional tuner and a digital tuner in your tv set so you made need to connect the cable and then do a channel setup for it to sense the active channel.

The image quality is best when the cable box is connected in this order from poorest to best; coaxial cable, rca cables (red, white, yellow), s-video (on older televisions), component video and optical audio using the three yellow, blue, green cables for video and a white or red for audio or optical input, DVI, or the best, HDMI with support for 1080p and audio. On your TV you should use an HDMI cable and simply change the Input or source button to that. The HDMI cable integrates video and sound and it will transmit a dolby surround signal to your TV just as a separate optical connection will.

How do setup a VCR/DVD with a Comcast DCT6200 and be able to record and watch different programs?

You can use a splitter. Or you can connect one connection from the Cable box to the TV and another connection from the Cable Box to the Recorder. By doing so, you can watch TV channels while recording a different program on the TV.

Sound drop with Shaw pvr box with hdmi. How do

This is a very common problem with no real solution. If your TV can be programmed to accept separate audio from HDMI video on the same input, you can feed the audio through standard RCA cables. Unfortunately most TV's do not allow this. Alternatively run them into a stereo receiver. Buying high end HDMI cables will not help. Most people I know with this issue have bit the bullet & just used component video instead. The difference in quality is minimal.

I have a VIZIO LED/LCD VF551XVT hooked up to a motorola HD DVR with a HDMI cable. When I switch from standard Def to High Def channels I lose the sound. If I turn the TV off/on the sound returns but if I...

I have the same set, same problem with one of my MOTOROLA boxes, but not with another. I have a SONY TV that works fine with this new MOTO box, but the new VIZIO does not. The audio is coming through the HDMI cable just fine, and the fact that it works when you cycle power on your TV means it's the SYNC between the TV and the BOX. I have the identical problem and am taking back the MOTO box for another one. I spoke to VIZIO for about 45 minutes trying different things. They think it's the MOTOROLA box, COX (my cable company) thinks it's this particular box, who knows.

Low volume on LG HDTV

I encountered the same thing using the HDMI interface on my new TWC cable box (Motorola DCX-3200). After a little bit of research, I finally fixed it by changing the digital audio mode in the cable box using this procedure:

1. Be sure the TV is on and connected to the cable box.
2. Using the cable box remote turn power OFF.
3. Immediately press the MENU key on the remote. The USER SETTINGS menu should appear on the TV screen.
4. Select the ADDITIONAL HDMI SETTINGS >>> menu item.
5. The ADDITIONAL HDMI SETTINGS menu will appear.
6. Scroll to the AUDIO OUTPUT item and select this.
7. Change the setting from AUTO to L-PCM.
8. Return to the main page
9. Using the remote, cycle power OFF.
10. When the cable box is turned on again, you should be good to go.

I realize these instructions are specific to the DCX-3200, but there may be a similar setup option available in your cable box as well.

The problem here is that the cable box is by default configured to use Dolby Digital audio, which requires an additional 10dB of headroom to deal with the boosted LFE channel. If the cable operator hasn't taken pains to set the system up correctly (and most haven't, apparently), the digital audio level sent on the HDMI interface will be approximately 11dB down from normal analog line levels on the HDTV channels. Changing to straight linear PCM sets the TV receiver audio level on the HDTV channels to match the levels on the non-HD channels.

The only problem with this fix is that if you intend to feed a Home Theater receiver that uses Dolby Digital processing with the cable box output you will lose the Dolby encoding feature and be forced into straight 2-channel stereo. For a simple installation like mine where I'm just feeding the TV, this fix works fine. If you have a more complex setup that takes advantage of Dolby Digital features (when it's available in program material), you may have to live with the problem.

For a technical reference on why this happens, see http://www.megahz.com/specimages/Dolby/LM100%20Cable%20App%20Note%2011-05.pdf

Hope this is useful.

Motorola DCT 6200/1000 seems to only have one audio output?

There are three options:

1) Connect the Tivo using the coax output of the cable box into the cable input of the Tivo

2) Exchange cable boxes with your cable provider for one with composite output jacks. It may require you to use a Motorola box that isn't High def depending on what your provider has. I know Comcast has a Motorola HD tuner that has composite outputs as well as component.

3) Upgrade to a Series 3 Tivo. Those units are designed for High Def. Use HDMI cable hookup.
