The chains sound loud when I am on it

Try lubricating the chains to decrease noise. You can use a grease like the one in the link or a 30 WT motor oil.

The chains are dry and it smells like it's burning. What type of oil do you use on the chains? Do you think that is the problem?

use transmission oil on the chains and let it soak in . friction can cause the burning smell from old dried up grease
