How do you repair a keyboard button that has popped off

I left home to meet a client for work and left my IBM T42 at home with my in-law...big mistake. I came home to find that somehow the letter "p" on my keyboard just up and jumped off. Nobody new about it and yet this thing is in 3 pieces and I need to figure out the right way to put it back together. The pieces are so small and fragile, I don't want to force anything. It looks like two mettal pieces have broken off where the seat of the button would be. What to do?

One of the letters (D)on my Toshiba keyboard popped off; I took the unit and the key with the ttwo plastic parts to a computer repair/sales shop. They played with it for a couple of minutes before trying to sell me a new keyboard for $140 installed. Then they said for a couple of hundred more dollars I could buy a whole new computer. I thanked them and retrieved my computer.d. This sounds like the story about a kingdom being lost because a horseshoe nail went missing.

The problem IS self fixable. I just did it now to my "]" button on a gateway laptop containing 2 plastic peices underneath it. There are concepts that make a laptop keyboard work. Primarilly, a slightly bendable pair of plastic peices that are made to latch together at the middle to form an X shape, the bottom of the X containing two comparatively large slits where it seats at the base of the keyboard (tuck them in first so they both snap), and at the top of the X is 4 notches where they meet at the button's back surface to snap into. the X shape is arranged first so that you can manually lift and drop the X so it smoothly lifts and drops. After securing the primary mechanical system, you snap one side of the button to the X shape only. Then you use a very thin long peice of metal like the end of a sissor or small screwdriver to lift the middle of the bottom side of the button so the entire button is lifted to about the height it is supposed to be, then keep it there so the button doesnt move any lower when you try to snap the other side of the button firmly down. This is the hardest part of the repair since you cant really see what your doing, but as long as the button is lifted to its normal height, it should snap in and look as good as new.

Thank you! You're fabulous -- just fixed my toshiba NB305 mini notebook -- the T fell off. It was a little confusing because the plastic 'x' assembly was still attached to the button (in my hand). Once I removed the plastic 'x' from the button I was able to follow your directions to snap each end back onto the computer keyboard and then popped the letter cap back on without much issue. THANK YOU.

Take a look at http://www.laptopkey.com/installation_guides.php It clearly shows how to remove and replace a laptop key.

Just as they said, it is quite simple. Little time consuming but easy. My daughter popped off my K button as I walked in looking to see what she was doing. I checked here and perfect answer! Take the one next to it off, (I took the J off) so you can see "EXACTLY" how the little plastic pieces fit back on....make sure they move slightly up and down....click your letter back on at all 4 "click" spots! Back in business!

It isn't too hard. Usually you can click them back in place. Just take another key off and see how that one fits together. They're easy to put back on.

Anon you are right it is easy... but you need to mention that there is a little plastic/rubber button that goes under the X. It wont work without it.

How do you repair a keyboard button that has popped off?

Laptop keyboard keys will "pop" back on just as easily as they "pop" off.

place the key over the raiser. center it and give it a push. if the raiser or key sockets are not damaged it will just pop back in. Otherwise you will need to replace the key.

you can find boards on ebay. Replacing the board over the key is usually better. Many times people selling keys charge 7-12$USD a key where the board coudl be 20-30. Personally i rather get the new board but each has their own choice

$300 seems a little outrageous - try a local Mom & Pop PC repair shop. Stay away from those big electronics stores. It shouldn't cost you more than $60. Good luck!

How do you repair a keyboard button that has popped off

http://www.isoretail.com/store/proddetail.php?prod=13N9988 Is where you can buy a new keyboard. It's 22 dollars, I'd suggest that. Unless you have a way to press the key back in the slot you're done. You can burn a ton of time when the part's not that expensive. (yes you can replace it yourself)

Keyboard repair

You should call Acer tech support and enquire about a keyboard. I am sure that they will tell you to take the computer to their rep for your area. Normaly they change the keyboard when there is a fault. If the circuit board under the keys is defective or if one of the IC's on the board failed, this would not be servicable at all. The keyboards on these computers were not really designed to be able to be serviced.
