Setting up Netgear Wireless-N router

Using Windows XP. Trying to set up a wireless network on desktop and share wireless connection with laptop. Previously set up a wireless router with internet service from At&T/Yahoo (with DSL modem) + Linksys Wireless-G notebook adapter. Worked fine. I moved and no AT&T internet service was available. Bought a Netgear Wireless-N router to go with Comcast cable internet service but having a ton of trouble setting this one up.
Appears that network was set up seccessfully on the desktop. Having trouble opening internet on laptop however (Toshiba satellite). Shows that wireless is connected, great signal, but it won't open anything. Tried also using the notebook adapter to get pages to open. No luck.

I am trying to set up my Avertec N1200 laptop with Windows XP to my Netgear wireless router. The router does not have a USB connection, but I have a Netgear wireless USB adapter. Also, I am getting the msg...

The Netgear Wireless USB adapter should be connected to your Avertec N1200 laptop to act as a wireless antenna. The driver for your Netgear Wireless Adapter should also be installed on your laptop. Once installed, click on the Windows Orb button on the lower left corner of your screen and go to All Programs. Look for the installed program for your Netgear Wireless Adapter to open up the wireless utility of your wireless adapter. That's where you should connect the wireless connection and not on Windows Wireless Manager.

Wireless Printer Setup

For installing a wireless printer on Windows XP, wireless router is an essential device.

Follow the recommended steps mentioned on the installation CD of the router, and set-up a wireless network.

Since several computers or laptops will access the printer, it0 1is recommended to connect the wireless printer to the main computer through the USB port.

To begin the installation process on Windows XP, access the network setting in the Control Panel, and activate the file and printer sharing option in the LAN setting.

This will allow the operating system to recognize the availability of a wireless printer.

Now, click the Start button, go to Devices and Printers, select Add a Printer option.

Click the second option- Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

The computer will search for available printer and reflect it on the screen.

Click Finish; and the printer is ready to begin the printing process.

Trying to network xp pc to wireless laptop

Right click on the drive you want to share. Ex: C:\Vol-xx = name. In the pop up window click Sharing & Security. This needs done to all the drives you want access too. To share a printer. Everyone must have the printer drivers installed. The Pc that has a direct connection to the printer must also Share the printer on the network. Open Printer & Faxes, highlight the printer you want to share. Click File than click Sharing follow windows instructions.
Small suggestion regards to the wireless side of the network. Suggest you setup security so others close too you can not tap into your network. (common).

About wi-fi

Windows XP has a built in wifi configuration tool, previous versions of windows dont have this feature. But if you were to buy a wireless card it comes with software for wireless to work on all versions of windows from 98 - XP most if not all new laptops have wifi built in & that will be able to share your broadband connection through the netgear router. You can configure the laptop & pc to share files & printer between each other, easy way of doing that is by using the wireless network setup wizard which can be found in Start -> All Prograns -> Accessories -> Communications -> Wireless Network Setup Wizard.
