The wireless card may not be included in your laptop or the wrong wireless card driver was installed.
I suggest you dowmload the driver usin=gf the Service Tag number.
You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating system. After a fresh installation of OS or a reformat of the harddisk, media device or audio driver needs to be installed, Windows XP doesn't recognized or doesn't have compatible driver for your device, the driver is found in the Motherboard CD. And in case you don't have the CD, you can download the driver over the internet---just by searching the model or brand of your laptop or motherboard.
