To update the firmware of the M4204 mp3 player click here and download the firmware. start the firmware and when it is runnin plug the M42xx in at the same time holding down the PLAY BUTTON (center) until a white screen with a small computer with a line going to your M42xx is displayed and then release the PLAY button. You can then click on stsrt and the firmware update will complete,,, DO NOT DISCONNECT DURING THIS UPDATE... it may take 2 times to complete this but it will work.... YEA!!!!

when it says download updated version, ignore. Better yet don't use RCA software at all. Use your windows media player(version 10 or better). Click on file wanted to start media player. Then click on "now playing" and display item or all chapters if audio book is being played. Plug in RCA and drag item(s) to working area of Media Player. Hit sync. and finito!

Just gotta reformat it in your my computer menu. Just right click devise then set default to Fat 32 and select reformat and your good to go. However this will erase your data but you will be able to use the player again

The first time I tried to restore the firmware in my Pearl it would not recognize it. I had to follow all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you run the software. Basically, try taking the battery out and waiting 10 seconds or so. Run the software and read all the instructions at the bottom of the popup window. then hold the play button, plug your player in, and keep holding that button until the software recognizes it. It works.

My M4204 worked great for a month andd held 601 songs with no problem than I added about 20 more and ir refuses to come on it just keeps loading and initializing forever. I erased about 300 songs it worked again I added more back same thing. exchanged for another one ay Wal mart after a long drawn out two day three store fight.. loaded 81 songs worked great loaded up to 348 songs wonderful again. I loaded up to 600 and same problem initializing forever. I dumped about 100 songs no help now I am starting over from scratch and same problem initializing to build data base message forever
IS this product just a pieco of s#!t or can it be fixed?
my fuckin mp3 will go to the first screen then sits on initializing... i restart it, it does the same thing... i connect it to my pc it dont come up... held the play button my pc says found new harware but that there has been an instillation problem and the device may not work properly....
same problem but been trying to update the firmware all night and the screen says AudiovoxOpal Firmware Download then all the lines on the screen are blank then down below there is a green box growing and shrinking and it says initalizing but the MP3 player itself does not say anything but Battery Full and USB Connected. Is this thig actually working or does it takes hours and hours and hours and days to download and shouldn't my MP3 player screen say downloding or something?
I tried to run the firmware and it says denied. No longer
