Yamaha P85 88Key Portable Digital Piano Logo
Elizabeth Kenney Posted on Jun 11, 2012

I have a Yamaha P70 digital piano and one F and F# stopped working. Then the adjacent G,A,B,C ansd the sharps inbetween would only work sometimes - ususally after the piano had been on for awhile. The n, after a few weeks, these notes would only work after tapping them alot and when they would finally sound, they would make a very loud note before sounding normal. Now I can't get any of these notese to work at all - like the F and F#.

I just experienced my p85 with a key problem on the F# below middle C. You will need to disassemble the keyboard and usually the keys are groups of 6 - 8 keys. If you remove the group that has the problem you might be able to find the problem visually. Mine just involved removing and reinserting the F# key back into the assembly. Then reinstalling the group of keys. If you can't get the key to work properly, you will probably need to buy the group assembly from Yamaha.

SOURCE: Yamaha Electronic Piano- certain notes malfunctioning

Either the first or second closure matrix line for the "A" keys is bad.

This may be a cracked or shorted circuit board.

A bank of diodes is used to prevent sneak electrical path if more than one octave has notes pressed.

First thing is to clean ALL the key contact areas and the conductive rubber pills with 99% isoprophyl alcohol.

This involves dis-assembly of the key area. If you are not competent in electronics, best left to a pro shop.

The keys are scanned in a matrix, two contacts per key and all the individual notes are in common (all the "A;s", "B's"...) And each octave is strobed for the first set of contacts and then for the second set of contacts. an the whole octave is read in parallel.

The reason for two contacts is one closes first and then the other as a key is lowered. The time between these is measured and is the note VELOCITY which for a piano controls the loadness of the note. IF ONE of the two fail, the loudness will vary as yours does.

SOURCE: as i play notes on

Check if you MIGHT be in a "guide" or learning mode. Some Yamaha synths have a mode that will play and then wait for you to hit the right key before moving on. If this is not the problem, a fix is not DIY and will require repair. I assume you are NOT using MIDI as in that case it is called "dreaded MIDI drone" and is due to data looping back into the unit which is an external fault.

SOURCE: key doesn't work properlyon yamaha p95 piano

take it back, its still under warranty. That means the key has a contact problem in the circuit. you have to take it all apart, clean it, check the contacts....probably lint. You can try vaccumming it and it might fix the problem. I bought one too and it wasnt good

Grimmel Bros upright piano. I just want to know how to close the Falsettoing thing so the cats stop scaring the sharp out of everyone.

It sounds like you are referring to the fallboard or key cover of your Grimmel Bros upright piano. To close the fallboard, gently push it up towards the piano's music stand until it clicks into place. The curved part you mentioned is probably the key cover, which can be lowered to protect the keys from dust and debris when the piano is not in use. To lower the key cover, grasp it at the center and gently pull it towards you until it lays flat over the keys. If your cats are causing problems by jumping on the piano keys, you may want to consider covering the piano with a fitted cover or keeping the room door closed to prevent them from accessing the instrument.

Anyone knows what could happen or if there is a chance to be repaired?

Hello, Magda -

Only an authorized Yamaha digital piano (Clarinova) service technician can answer your question regarding a chance of repairing your piano.

If you have not already done so, you can locate an authorized service technician here:

Yamaha P-70 digital piano. A few keys are making a loud knocking noise. The note still sounds, but the knocking noise on the few keys can be heard at the other end of the house

There's an extremely comprehensive pair of videos about repairing this problem on YouTube thanks to David Allyn. I have embedded them below, or you can search "P70 Noisy Keyboard Repair".

Hello, I have a Yamaha P90. 4 keys are not responding. all others are ok and give sound. What happened ?

If they are the same note- different octave- it may be a bad solder joint near the main oscillator IC.

If they are the same cluster (adjacent white keys or adjacent black keys) in the octave, it may be a faulty wire connection.

Problem with Yamaha YDP223 Digital Piano - Damper Pedal . The damper pedal on the piano suddenly stopped working (it was working before), but the two other pedals are still working fine. What may be the...

First thing is to check the connector is fully seated... sometimes most of the contacts make but one might not. Beyond that, contacts in the pedal are next suspect.

White spirit is NOT what you should use. Mineral spirit leaves a residue film.

Use 99% isoprophyl alcohol.

ALSO inspect the contactboard for cracks by candeling with bright light behind it.
