I tried to fix update feature of Microsoft Security Essentials-followed instructions. Now Dell XP desktop has black screen with NTLDR missing message and Ctrl Alt Delete to restart which doesn't work.
NTLDR is the boot loader for windows XP. This is the part the kick starts the entire process of XP loading. It is located at C:\NTLDR One of the easier ways to fix this is Either boot in to the recover console from a Windows XP disc, or download Hiren Boot CD, burn it to a disc. Insert the CD into your Dell and reboot the computer. Note you may need to enter BIOS and enable boot to CD/DVD. Once at the Hiren menu, select Boot Mini XP. Once the Mini XP loads you can copy NTLDR loader from the mini xp to your C:\ drive. Then remove the disc and reboot the computer.

What happened is when you changed the drive letters you switched one that should not have been changed.... You need to change it back so the original C: is C:
Because the original NTLDR file was on the C: drive which is the Windows XP Boot Loader and when you swapped it it couldnt find the ntldr on the new C:
From my opinion the only way to switch it back is to reinstall the OS onto the drive you want to be C:

Well Bart CD that everyone downloads has some nice utilities on it, some free some not.
You have to be carefull using such utilities as they can cause more harm then good...
You now have to reinstall windows before you can apply sp3. Sp3 is not bootable and bart CD doesn't have windows install of any kind on it... Reinstall windows with your disc then browse to your cd and double click on sp3 to update...
Hope everything works out now....
Please rate this solution if it helps... Thank You...

the easyest way to fix this issue is to reinstal your O.S. this error have two reasons:
1.you erase something in windows folder.
2.you tried to instal a O.S.
