If the remote that does not now work came with the unit--ie it is original and not a universal it should work.

Note that the remote can be tested--all shops use either a card test--it has a strip that reacts to the infrared signal the remote sends and lights that strip.

Some digital cameras in a dark room will react on their display screen in the same way when the remote is pointed at them and buttons on it pressed.

Idea is to find out if the remote is working or not....

Universal remote may give you few controls like power on-off, FF, REW etc but Menu may not open.

Universal remote does not work with Magnavox combo of dvd vcr, because no dubbing button. But magnavox has many remotes that will NB884, NB559, NB677.NB627 which also works on Sharp dvd vcr combo.

Try a universal remote to determine if it is your remote or you combos IR reciever.

"Universal" is a joke; they should be called 'multibrand.'

PROGRAMMING DEVICE CONTROL
The One For All 3 Device Universal Remote Control is preprogrammed at
the factory to operate an RCA TV, a Toshiba DVD player, and a Motorola
cable box.To control devices other than the default brands,perform the following
steps; otherwise skip this section:
1. Turn on a desired device (e.g.,VCR or DVD player) and, if
applicable, insert media (e.g., cassette or disc).
NOTE: Please read steps 2 through 4 completely before proceeding.
Highlight or write down the codes and device you wish to program
before starting step 2.
2. On the remote control,press a device key once (i.e., DVD/VCR,
CBL/SAT,or TV).
NOTE: To program control of a VCR, PVR (or DVR),TV/VCR Combo,
or TV/VCR/DVD Player Combo press DVD/VCR once.After programming
a VCR Combo device, you will be able to control channel selection,
volume, and VCR functions.
