I bought an All-in-One Multifunctional Converter (Coolmax CD-350-combo) to transfer my data from my non-working laptop to my new laptop. The problem is that it doesn't fit into my hard drive. My old laptop is a Gateway 9500. Any suggestions?

I have spent hours trying to figure out how this damn thing works since the instructions require the user to have way more computing skill than I. First, the thing comes apart, one part being the interface and additional power supply and the other being the power supply that may connect to the Coolmax or your HD power supply if not operational through the Coolmax. If your old HD is larger than 3.5", you may have to connect the power plug to the HD 4 pin power source. otherwise, connect old HD to the Coolmax CD 350 adapter and then connect the Support USB2.0 to a USB interface on your new computer. If your old HD is a 2.5 SATA , do not connect the red power plug to a USB2 interface on your new computer unless you are positive the old HD operates over 5V. Connecting the red USB power source to your new computers USB2 interface may cause the old HD to shoot sparks and smoke, and you will not need the device any more.

Don't know if you've solved this problem, but I was having the same issue using Windows 7, 64bit. It had been working but Explorer crashed & Explorer restarted, it recognized the device, but I couldn't access the files. I tried it on another laptop & it worked. So I left it plugged in & restarted the computer and that fixed the problem. If that doesn't work, you may have to uninstall the driver that windows automatically installed for it & then plug it back in & have windows reinstall the driver. Good luck.

My approach is to put the old hard drive into the spare slot of the new computer. There should be an IDE cable plug somewhere. Makes things easy. I also use Clonezilla to transfer data.

Hello

Ok, if the computer makes a sound, without notifying you that the device is not recognized, here is something you can try.

Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Administrative tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disc Management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below, right click on it and choose to assign new drive letter and paths. If there is no drive letter assigned to the drive, assign on, otherwise just choose the option to change the drive letter.

Hope this can help you.

Kind regards
Andrea

The Coolmax adapter is an USB hard drive adapter that can connect various types hard drives to your computer. This is used for testing and and transferring data to and from hard drives connected to the computer via the computer's USB port.

This Coolmax USB hard disk adapter can connect a 2.5-, 3.5- and 5.25-inch IDE or SATA hard disk to a PC. The black adapter box connects the hard disk, while the secondary power plug/adapter powers the drive. In the case of smaller notebook or SATA disks, the power cable is plugged directly into the adapter (as opposed to straight into the IDE hard disk).
The red USB cable, meanwhile, can be used to power hard disks directly from the host PC's bus via another USB port.

Connect the hard drive to the adapter as detailed above, power up your computer and plug the Coolmax USB cable into the conputer's USB port. The computer will detect and see this as an external drive, most likely as a E drive (the next drive letter that is available). Click on this drive and open to open the folder/s where your data is stored then select the folder/s and/or data and copy them, then open the hard drive on the computer and paste the folder/s and/or files onto the new hard drive.

Does anyone have the instructions for this as the web site is poping up will damage your computer

I would ignore the warning. I went to this web site. http://www.coolmax.com/ and my Web Of Trust gives it a questionable rating as there are not enough reviews to give it a good rating. I found nothing wrong with the web site. I suspect you may have spyware that has infected your computer. This is how they operate. They pop up scaring you and wanting you to click the scan or something else and when you do you have problems. Run all your security scans in Safe Mode and clean all the find.

I have a dead hard drive 2.5" SATA

If it is truly dead and you MUST have the information from it then the only real alternative is to send it to a data recovery expert. These services are NOT cheap
If it clicks or makes random noises clicks pings etc then it is most likely dead I am afraid.
