I am assuming that at 30 yrs old, this is not a frostfree type
i defrost by taking all food out, wrap in a blanket and defrost with a hairdryer. don't point too close at plastics and don't let water drip on it. on no account use a knife to scrape ice away - use a plastic spatula

I have a GE Model #TBX18NI- 18.2cuft top freezer/refrigerator, and the freezer part is working great, but the refrigerator part seems to be getting warmer and warmer. I've tried adjusting the temp...

The frig has a defrost timer which activates an electric element which cyclially defrosts the evaporator in the freezer. If either the heating element or the defrost thermostat are faulty the freezer evaporator will freeze solid not allowing cold air circulation to the rest of the frig.
At a suiteable time empty fridge contents into insulated containers and turn fridge off at powerpoint and allow to fully defrost leaving doors open. The evaporator coil in frostfree is normally located behind the rear panel of the freezer. If you do not have defrost heater it will take 3-4 hrs for complete defrost.
After defrost turn fridge back on and make sure items to be returned to freezer are free from moisture and ice and keep freezer open for minimum of time as moisture will start building up onthe evapoator.
If the fridge works ok for a couple of days and the the original problem returns the problem is with defrost thermostat or defrost heater

Freezer works but frigde isn't working

once ice forms on the freezer coils there is no air flow. I had the same thing. I suspect your defrost cycle is compromised. Could be the bimetal switch, defrost timer or defrost heater element.

Freezer/refrigerator

Refrigerators with an evaporator (called a humid plate on this type of refrigerator) in the refrigerator section are called a semi-automatic defrost. This means that the freezer section occasionally needs defrosting but the refrigerator section defrosts by a means called "heat leakage defrost". How it should work....
the cold control, (the electrical device under the dial), leaves the compressor off for long enough for the plate to melt off each cycle.
If yours is not melting off perhaps you have a faulty control or you have it set too high. hope this help

Ice & water dripping in refrigerator

you have a clogged evap. drain and if you want the probelm to go away you need to that the back panel off of the freezer, then use a hair dryer to melt all the visible ice then use boiling hot water to flush the evap. drain tube which is also clogged with ice . once water flows all the way throuh the pipes as if you have flush the tiolet you have then cleared your issue
