So I ran the dryer on Friday afternoon then a load in the washer on Saturday morning. After the wash stopped I smelled a burning odor (kinda like burnt toast in a toaster smell). When I opened the dryer some white powder substance came out. I called the GE repair man and he could not find anything. My concern is that I have one year old and the unit is by the only exit door. Any solutions?

Having the same problem as everyone else , I make a habit of cleaning the filter once a month. I would like to advise people that if your load is heavy (such as scatter rugs) they will not spin out completely even when the filter is cleaned. No more GE for me!!

I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.

hello if the belt is broken quite easy to put back on .take the back off you should see the belt if it has snaped or just come off .at the bottom of the washer you should see the motor at the back of the motor you should see 2 nuts this holds the motor on get a felt tip pen and mark the 2 nuts where they are fixed so you know where to tighten back on . get spanner and loosen the 2 nuts the motor should drop down put the belt back on and tighten up good luck

I had this same problem and it drove my crazy. It turned out to be a buildup of fabric softener gunk under the automatic fabric softener dispenser. If you have not done so, I recommend you remove the dispenser and check under it to look for residue...most likely it is there. This residue creates the most God awful odor that I refuse to even use the dispenser anymore...it's the good old Downy Ball for me.
I hope this works for you, as I know this situation is very irritating.

I am going through this right now and best I can tell..needs a new belt. Pop the front off of your washer (UNPLUG IT FIRST:)) and see if there are black shavings on the bottom. The appliance place where we usaully order our parts from do not carry this belt in stock so it will have to be ordered. Price from them was $19.00+ tax
