Is it the fan or the controller

• I have a Bionaire brand table electric fan.
  • It has a 3 speed fan motor.
  • The electric motor is a BM-122 Decomin brand 3 speed motor.
    • There are 6 wires:
      • Red wire.
      • Black wire.
      • White wire.
      • Yellow wire.
      • Gray wire.
      • Blue wire.
        • The motor has a 4mu 250volt capacitor.

• This fan has an oscillating grill with independent sync motor, and timer circuit.
• Something was wrong with the solid state circuitry (everything worked but the motor!), but a quick test of the motor indicated it does work.
• The motor uses a start and run capacitor.
• I decided to change controls to a simple mechanical switch and fore go for now anything beyond 3 speeds.
• The printed circuit board shows the following connections:
  • Black wire
  • Blue wire
  • Yellow wire
    • Are respective for the:
      • High fan motor speed
      • Medium fan motor speed
      • Low fan motor speed
• I think the gray wire goes out to the oscillator motor.
  • The Red wire is marked as Line, for the power source.
• All wires are in continuity with each other EXCEPT RED is not with any other wire. How to Verify Fan Motor Wiring Connections
  • Checking the Motor and Capacitor Connections
  • Double check your connections using the fan wiring diagrams.
  • You should see that there is a separate motor winding for high speed.
    • The concern is that there is a capacitor for the motor.
    • So I'm thinking that the motor may have to start with the slower speeds first.
    • and not start in the high speed because the motor or capacitor has not been designed for that type of operation.

Unlikely a blower motor resistor problem. If the resistor is faulty. the fan speeds will not work/fail on the lower speeds. High speed will normally always work. If the fan is non operational suspect a fan motor issue.Bad fan motor/switch/wiring to it

My guess is that you have gas heat. If this is the case, sounds to me like your main control board or depending on age of furnace, fan controller is not working. With gas furnaces, it utilizes 2 fan speeds. High for cooling, & Low for heating. Your thermostat only controls the High speed - switches when you turn your fan on & when there is a call for cooling. The only other thing I can think of is it is possible that the Low speed windings on the blower motor are open causing it to not turn on. Most motors have 3 to 4 speeds & only 2 are used. Switch the heat motor wires in the furnace (on the control board) with one that is on a spare terminal.

When it does this, is it just the display that goes blank or is there a message pn the screen? What version of windows?

When the blower works only on the high setting its usually a bad blower resistor which is right near the blower motor. now you say it would always blow high regardless of the fan speed setting that would indicate probably the climate control unit or a connector problem somewhere. finally it not working at all may be the climate control unit or connection went bad even further. it might have a blown fuse or a bad blower motor in addition to the climate control unit or connector problem .check for power and ground at the blower motor. the power is supplied from fuses and may have a relay also. the ground is supplied from the climate control unit and goes through the resistor to control the fan speed. good luck

1) Are you replacing the 3-speed switch?
This is a field with much discussion because Westinghouse 4-wire fan switches vary.
Process of elimination is needed to find hot line. From there you test each wire to the hot line wire to determine which wire or combination of wires makes up low, medium, and high speed.

2) Or are you looking at fan connection wiring at ceiling?
Green wire goes to bare ground.
Fan should have hot and neutral.

Hot line should be black.
Neutral should be white.

Red usually goes to light
Blue is normally not there.

Where is the white neutral wire?

Take multimeter set to read ohms and test black wire to each other wire.
Process of elimination should reveal correct wiring.

sounds like a shorrt to 12v to me. The wire is hot and the fan is shutting off because the blower is bad, getting to hot, it will bind, causing over amperage.

If you are not using a seperate switch to control the fan the blue and black go together and the white goes to white and the green goes to green. The blue wire is the fan power wire and the black is the light power wire if you are just using the switch on the fan to control the fan speed then the above configuration is the way it should be wired.

Wiring a three speed fan switch

My daughter called me the other day and said Dad the ceiling fan in the kitchen is not working only the light works. I went over and removed the three screws that hold the light and pull chain for the fan down and found that the fan control switch had snapped open and all 4 wires had popped out. The snap clips on each side of the switch had broken off. I went down to Home Depot in the ceiling department and found the switch I was looking for. It said for a four wire ceiling fan. OK, know lets put it back together. First of all if you look at the new switch you should see four holds were the wires will be pushed into. The black wire in the fan is the hot or load wire, this wire is hot whenever the wall switch to the fan is turned on. Put this wire in the hole that is marked “L” this stands for load. Now with this switch in the off position the fan will not work until you pull the chain. The other three holes are marked #1, #2 and #3. On most fans #1 is usually high speed. # 2 medium and #3 low speed. What you now have to determine is what wires are high medium and low. The easiest way to do this is before you put any of the wires back into the new switch is to FIRST MAKE SURE NO POWER IS GOING TO THE FAN. Then simply take one of the colored wires at a time and twist it together with the black hot wire.
Turn the power back on to the fan and knot the fans speed. Do this with all three wires one at a time until you can determine which wire is high speed. Note the color of the wire and mark it down on paper.(Example; blue wire high speed.) Do this with the other two wires to determine there speed. Once you have the speed of each wire you can reassemble the new switch.
Black wire (Load) goes in hole marked L. High speed wire goes in hole marked # 1. Medium speed goes in hole marked #2 and low speed goes in hole # 3. MAKE SURE THE POWER TO THE FAN IS TURNED OFF WHILE YOU ASSEMBLE THE NEW SWITCH.
For those of you that have all these wired hooked up right and still the fan won't work I would then look for an open neutral wire. It should be a white wire. Check to see if all the wires are securly attached.
Good luck. One more word of advice. If you're not sure on what you are doing when it comes to electrical wiring then please do not attempt to do this or any other electrial work yourself. Call a licensed electrian. Any mistakes on your part could void your home owners insurance in case of a fire.

The fan speed is controlled by the processor and BIOS. It is on full speed when it starts, but the processor turns it down again as soon as it starts to run.
Could be loose memory modules or the processor heatsink has come loose. Try taking off the back compartments and check everything is fitted OK.
