Your rings are gone.......when the engine sits oil slips through the rings into the combustion chamber, and when you start the white smoke you see is the oil burning off. this looks ugly, but is not detrimental to your car. Make sure to keep the checking the oil, as you are burning some off each time you start.
some engine treatments claim to be able to fix the problem by just adding a supplement into the oil. Z-max ect....or Lucas.
these lube up the old rings and help to stop oil from slipping past into the combustion chamber.
the only way to totally fix it is to do a rebuild, and get new rings.

Hi, sounds like you need to replace your valve seals or if yours is the turbo the sealing rings in the turbo are worn.
What happens is that oil over night or when the engine is stopped runs into the intake of the engine in small amounts then when the engine is started the oil is burnt hence white smoke.
Check each spark plug in each cyclinder to see is one of them or all of them charred with black burnt oil deposits.
In one plug has more than the rest you can be rest asured it is the valve seals.
If it is the turbo version it has to be the turbo sealing rings.
Best to replace the turbo in this case as it is only a mater of time before it goes. this as we always say is the warning light on it telling us that its days are numbered.
No disrespect to other replies, but Blue smoke usually means oil, black smoke means fuel, and white smoke means (potentially) coolant.
Check your head gasket, and your coolant level. if you are constantly topping up the ol' prestone, you might want to have a better look around.
