Hello, I hace a Kenmore Elite Top loader, Model 110.16962502. Periodically the cycle won't start. Move the dial a bit to right does not start it. Once the soap is in and the tub is filling with water, I close the lid and walk away. When I come back to switch loads, I find the cycle never started and the clothes are sitting in water. If I let the lid drop close slightly, the cycle will then start.
The lid is not making proper contact with the lid switch, easy repair.
the lid is held to the maintop with a set of hinges. The left side hinge actually doubles as the lid switch actuator. so youll need to lift the lid, and feel for the opposite end of the hinge assy. when you feel the metal "arm " for lack of better word. youll need to bend it slightly towards the back of machine( usually use a hollow shafted screwdriver) as you bend backward the lid will want to close, so apply a little pressure. Your bending the "arm" to make better contact with the switch which ismountedtothe underside of the main top assembly. Before starting open and close the lid a few times and listen for the "click" of the switch activating. then recheck after bending youll hear a big diff

If you take the front off in the lower right you will find a pump motor that controls the drain flow. This may defective. Use a shop vac to empty the water in washer if needs be. But remove and test this pump.
Hello wheeljc; I had the same problem when I purchased my Kenmore Elite in 2006. I have a HE4t front load. It's possible that you're using to much detergent, if you're using HE liquid it only requires a small amount and does a very good job.
seems the timer knob is old and need of replacement normally happens due to age as the timer switches inside the timer knob become old and sticky mostly unable to move so the timer isnt able to do much of its job
there should be 2 screw on the left and right side of the console. remove the screws and the console flips back so you can get to the timer. youll have to remove the knob and dial from timer too to get to the screws that hold the timer in place. if you dont have a local appliance parts store in your area then you can order the timer at sears.com and theyll ship it to your house
