Some sets in this size range will not format the picture in HD at full screen but only 4x3 or letter box format.

Google the model number with "specs" or consult the owner manual to see what the set is designed for.

Try using the wide mode. There are multiple screens you can get such as wide, zoom, full, and wide zoom. Go through these til you get the picture you want.

How to make full screen
Press menu button look for screen size you want 16.9. there should also be a single button on your remote to press. If you dont know the button to press it useually says wide or it looks like a tv symol.

My samsung tv picture is off centre with a grey line to the left of the picture can only get a full screen in wide zoom setting which still gives an incorrect picture, i dont use any extra equipment,
A lot of sets do have a way to center or even increase the width of the picture but all require to know the exact model to see if they offer this option or not.

If its a ps42a457p I doubt it has that unless it is in the customer menu somewhere.

Locate the button on the remote that came with the TV labeled "ratio" or "wide" or " format" not sure what yours is labeled different brands call it different things, but press it multiple times until you get the picture the way you want it to look.

Picture not filling up the screen

The Vizio HDTV sets are all software driven. With the remote control select the menu option.
Then under the picture tab. look for the picture format full screen, wide screen. select the wide screen option. This setting should fill the screen.
