If you look at the photo below of the St. James, you can probably see the thread path. Your machine would thread very similarly. Or look at some threading diagrams for pre-computerized Singer sewing machines.
There are tiny clips but you wont see them you need a small screwdriver to lever under the bottom of the cover. Once you get one clip off you will see how the rest come off.
1 st check all your fuses ....but sounds like a bad ground lift the vehicle off the ground and put a jack stand under it .. locate the tank then locate the wires going to the tank find the ground wire that is connected to it and look to ensure it is still making a connection as well as not over corroded if so remove the old screw and with sandpaper or a wire brush clean the surface of the eye clip as well as a new screw as well if possible unclip and reclip the connector so to help loosen any rust that may cause any interference with the connection this should fix ya
