Do an liquid clean of the game. Clean with an glass cleaner or some solvent that will clean stuck on smudges. Make sure that the PS3 has adequate ventilation.

yeah, EA is known to have some bad ps 3 service to some players, it could be the kind of roughter/modom or gateway you are usein. check the Madden info booklet and check for port forwerding numbers near the back or in network part of the booklet. if there is no info there try EAs sight for the game. I have not had any luck in fixing my gateway to play any EA server baced game (burn out ps3, a few others) and some other games run very slowly online (mgs4). im sorry this is not a solution realy, but maby something there can help point you to ware you can get the info if no one on this sight can help you.

Madden 09 itself has a lot of issues. EA is supposed to come up with a patch to fix the freezing issue for Madden 09.
There are a lot of unhappy madden 09 owners outh there.
As far as freezing on any game that sounds like a bluray diode issue or overheating issues.
keep the console in a well vented are (maybe even add a small portable fan from walmart that can help cool down your system.
