I've only had this mp3 for about 3 weeks. It worked great until yesterday. It froze up for a few hours. I turned it off and not it will not come back on. There is no reset button anywhere on the device.
Not sure what to do about the "not turning on" part, but I have a solution to my problem which was the same as a few other people.
I called 800-878-5779 option #5 (which is their customer service phone number that apparently doesn't appear in any of the materials that were in my package, or in any convenient place on their website).
I have a M4208RD-B which was stuck on "initilizing" and not being recognized by my computer.
According to the customer service folks, I needed a firmware update which seems only to be available through a magical email that they sent to me. The email also contains instructions on how to upload the firmware through a series of timed button pushes.
Here are the instructions included in my email:
M42- Initializing problem or not powering on:
Download firmware upgrade included in this email
Hold play/pause button for 15 seconds
Hold menu button for 10 seconds
Attach M4204 via USB cable while holding play/pause button
This should start the firmware upgrade
Possible an error message of “cant write to disk” will pop up
Firmware upgrade will end with error do not close
Go to My Computer find the drive that holds the MP3 player
Right click scroll down to format, format the player
Run firmware upgrade again
The firmware that they sent me in the email was v 1.7.2.0, which is not listed under the Opal 4208 on the website. It is under the 4204 player on the website.
As you can see in the above email that they sent to me, I got the firmware update for the 4204. I would think that the update on the website is the same as the one that they sent me in the email, but I'm not 100% sure. To be 100% you could just call the 800 number and get your own email.
Hope this helps.
I did this, and it worked for a day. And then the same problem...
After months of frustration I fianlly sent my unit into Audiovox. After several attempted fixes on my own, my unit kept reverting back to the "initilizing" screen. It would work for a day or two, but would eventually revert back after reinstalling the firmware. I called the 800 number provided above. Audiovox paid for the shipping and sent me a new player about 5 weeks later. The new unit seems to be working, but I willnever buy another RCA product again.

To reset it hold down power botton for 10 seconds .that its all you can try
Thanks to the other guy who posted the details from his Audiovox email for the RCA OPAL 8GB fix. Although I too have an OPAL 8GB and there are no specific support details for it on Audiovox support site, his solution did work for me, which was to run the firmware updater for the 4GB unit. It was actually pretty easy. I followed the install instructions that came with the firmware updater download, and it worked fine. I didn't need to do any of the confusing button-pushing. My unit appeared to be completely dead but seems to have come back to life just fine.
Hi.
You can read complete troubleshooting opening the link below:

If anyone needs the owners manual for this or the M4204, here is the main page for RCA. http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/product.aspx?product=407
How can i solve it
Well, I had the same problem beacuse I'd been unplugging my mp3 without ejecting it first. If you did this and you're using Windows:
Worked for me.

i have the same problem.was listening to music and turned it off now it doesn't come on at all.
I just got mine yesterday. I turned it off after charging and now all it says is "initializing...". It won't do the firmware update like the RCA site says. It won't do anything.
Transfered some music to the player and now will only show the "OPAL initializing..." screen.
mine said initializing for, like, ever then i turned it off and it refuses to turn back on. piece of sh*t.
Mine is stuck on initializing screen. Wont do anything else. I have had it for only 5 days. What a waste of time and money.
I had mine for about 3 weeks it got stuck on initializing screen then when I removed all the music from the player it never turned back on. Now my computer doesn't even recognize it when it gets plugged in. I have tried using different usb cables and this piece of **** does nothing.
I get the same exact problem. The computer will not recognise the player at all, and all it does is initialize. I tried hitting the "play" button, and I tried resetting the player (by holding down the menu button for more than 10 seconds).
I have a ticket in at the RCA / audiobox site, but don't expect any type of intelligent answer. If I get one I will forward. (they say that they have a 72 hr turnaround) I should have known that a $50 MP3 player was too much to ask for.
I have the same problem. Worked great for a couple of hours, then only initialized forever, and now nothing at all. Computer does not recognize it and can't do a firmware upgrade without recognizing the unit. No answer yet from Audiovox incident ticket. Like the other guy said, what did I expect for $50?

Gee at least you got to use it for a day or two. I just plugged mine in to charge for the first time. After the initial charge I tried to turn it on and all it says now is "initializing" and my computer won't recognize it at all.
my opal RCA mp3 keep saying initializing
it worked fine even after i put some music on it and pictures and it wasn't dead there was still half a battery left and i charged it and when i took it off the charger then turned it off and later turned it back on it would go to the white screen that says "Opal" and "Initializing..." and it usually took a few secconds to load but when i went to turn it on it went to that screen and it wouldnt load anymore i even let it sit like that or 5min and it still wouldnt work and i even tried turning it off then turning it back on and it still wouldnt work and now it wont even turn on
Today i was lying on my couch flipping through my Mp3 and all the sudden it froze up, and I don't know what to do.Â
I was just listening to my music. I went into settings and took shuffle off. Then I tried to skip back a couple of songs and it froze with the lights on. I plugged it into the computer and the computer doesn't even realize it is plugged in.

It won't turn on. When it did yesterday, all it did was say it was initializing. I hooked it up to the charger and it glows, but it doesn't turn on....How can I fix it?
I'm having the problem with opal. Please find some way to fix it.
This is so ***! My opal won't turn on. The screen is just bright, but no picture. It worked fine 2 days ago! This is so jewish!!!
My mp3 player will not turn on, even when I hold the power button down for any length of time. I know the unit has power. Any ideas???
I got this for christmas. This is what i listen to when i get stressed.
For a few weeks, I would go to turn it on and it would freeze at the initializing screen.
I tried a solution listed, sure as hell didn't work.
Brother had the same problem, same mp3 player. His is working now.
Now mine won't turn on at all. I can plug it up to charge, nothing will register. Plugging it up to the computer, the computer won't even register it. I'm pissed. My parents got this for me for christmas, and now it doesn't even work.
I would love for this to be able to work!!!! >:(
My boyfriend got this for me for christmas...was low on money...but I was happy just to have something to listen to at work and on my walks... Now this week I go to turn it on and all ofa sudden it'll go to the initializing screen then to Opal's "please wait"...it still will say this after HOURS!
RCA Sucks. they wont let me return my broken opal without a receipt. this was a christmas present, and i dont have the receipt. all they will do is send me a stupid email with a fix, but i cant even turn the damn thing on, its totally dead. the computer doesnt even charge it or recognize it.
