I bought a vintage singer 201k, hand cranked. Sews like a dream, but the stitch length adjuster slips upwards to the smallest stitch length when sewing. The screws on the stitch length adjuster are all screwed in tight, and the bolt on the side is tightened. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Take the machine to a sewing machine shop & have them check the screw
or the stitch length adjuster, the threads could be stripped out

SOURCE: Changing stitches

You probably have not adjusted you stitch width and length.
Also a manual for this machine is currently being sold on Ebay for $4+. Probably would be a good investment for you.

SOURCE: Singer 5050

I was hoping you would have got another answer, I have a mechanical sewing machine ( Singer 5040) with the exact same problem. However, if i use the programed stitches I can sew a zigzag. If i do it manually and set the zigzag width to any width ( even the widest) I get only the same straight stitch, and no mater what length I select it is the same too, very close to gether about 1 1/2 inch stitch.
I took my entire maching apart to expose inside both top side and underneath, nothing apeared loose or broke and i oiled it up. I bought a new bobbin holder and still the same effect. So it has to be something serious is my conclusion...sounds like a trip to Sears to me...LOL

SOURCE: Singer 8280 is not giving me a useable stitch due to tension is not properly feeding resulting , no interlocking

Make sure that the thread is not getting caught on the handle. I was having the same problem and tried everything only to find that my thread was caught.

Sounds like it is either out of time or the adjuster spring needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: Singer Touch Tronic 2001 Sewing Machine Stuck on Sewing Straight Stitch Only

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I finally figured out that I had the straight stitch needle plate (the one with the single hole), rather than the zig zag needle plate (the one with the curved hole). When I changed plates, it worked fine.

Singer 6215 Stitch length dial not working properly...have to force knob to turn past 2.5...stitch lengths don't seem to change, either. Thanks!

How long has it been since you've cleaned and oiled your machine?

Your machine requires frequent oiling on the moving metal parts. Most likely the stitch length selector has begun to seize.

The heated hairdryer may be a good choice to try.

Sounds like it is still not feeding smoothly, Try putting some clear tape on the bottom of the foot and tissue paper under the leather. Leather is tricky sometimes.

My sewing machine seems to do the same stitch length if I set it on 1 or 4 it doesn't change. I also have to pull the fabric along as the machine does not move it, just sews in the same spot. The machine...

There are a couple of things that could cause this. Your feed dogs could be either low or worn down, so they are not biting into the fabric enough to move it. The presser foot pressure could be set at it's lowest setting and not pressing the fabric firmly against the feed dogs, thereby allowing the feed dogs to slip under the fabric without moving it. You could also have a lubrication issue or a broken part in the stitch length adjustment system. In any case it would probably be best to take it to a reputable sewing machine repair shop in your area for a tune up. That's a great idea anyway after buying any machine second hand.

Be sure to install a brand new sharp needle before sewing. Check that the needle, thread, and fabric are compatible. An embroidery needle or top stitch needle may help.

When threading the top thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot before threading to insure the thread seats in the tension disk.

Hi Wendy. No stitches like this is likely one of two things. The needle isn't fully inserted into the needle bar. Or it's out of time.

Luckily most singers of that era are similar. And there is lots of info on how to time them online.

Is there a button on this 807 machine bernina which you can press for it to stitch backwards like on the singer machine 507 as its saves time on tiring ends up at the beginning and end of sewing thank...

The stitch length control is moved upwards, beyond the 'zero' position to make it sew backwards. To demonstrate, with the machine off, adjust the stitch length to '2' using the knob on the stitch-length lever. Now push the lever upwards until it stops - it will go past the zero position and this is now in reverse mode.

Singer Model 6212c only sews in reverse... Just brought this machine home today. Ha Ha, it only sews in reverse mode.

there's probably nothing wrong with your machine.

check and see if your stitch length setting is set to Stretch instead of somewhere between 2 and 3.

If it's in the stretch zone (below 0), it can sometimes sew backwards unexpectedly depending on what stitch you have selected.

make sure you have selected a straight stitch, and then select the highest stitch width and a stitch length of somewhere between 2 and 3.

it will most likely work fine.
