The problem is in the vertical deflection circuits which is responsible for giving a full picture. Since the set is 8 years old the money would be better spent on a new tv since more frequent break downs in other parts of the set would be more likely due to age.
Your power supply board is dead, you know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors.These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable,and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.
it could be a defective power supply due to a voltage fluctuation from the grid, check the power cord (just to make sure) or it could also be a fuse (inside the TV)
I would try leaving the TV unplugged for 30mins so the TV can reset itself.
If that doesn't work, your TV should still be under warranty. I know 95% of come with a 1 year warranty.
The most common problem with Sylvania TVs made by FUNAI, the Backlight Inverter board fails to early in life. ( That's the part that powers the screen)
The Tv can't power up the screen and it turns off automatically. Basically called "Protection Mode" so it protects the other parts inside the TV.
This is a bit to vague of an explaination to properly trouble shoot you problem. Although most sets are fixable, it depends on the value of the set to you. I have seen problems like this be as easy as just a fuse and all the way to a badfly-backtransformer. If you have a volt ohm meter, you could check the fuse and see if it's the easy fix ( make sure you always unplug the set before checking anything in the set ). If the fuse is bad, you can simply change it and your ready to go. If it's anything else, it may require more extensive board work and I would suggest you seek professional help.
