I cleared pilot feed tube. I unscrewed tube, and when pushing in valve to light pilot, I get no gas smell. I believe gas valve is bad, but are there any other possibilities? Is replacing gas valve something I can do myself?

Better check the incoming gas pressure first, it should match the requirement as stated on the nameplate. Low gas pressure will make the pilot flame small until it could not heat up the thermopile which will shut both main burner and pilot flame.

Excellent reason to use Dormont flex lines.
If water gets to your combination valve (the thing with the on-off knob,) it should be replaced. Can you hear gas hissing? If there is gas at the orifice, it should light. check to see that all of the air is purged. Can you smell gas?

Try to spray wd40 on knob.
If spraying wd40 doesn't work, you have to replace the gas valve.

Hi there.
Check the thermopile, it must be clean and free of soot or any form of dirt. The gas pressure must be sufficient and all wiring should be tightly connected. Check also the hi limit, it should have continuity across its terminals when tested with an ohm meter.

Hi there.
Check and tighten all wiring connections.
Check the hi limit for continuity across the terminals using an ohm meter, if it has no continuity, you have to replace the hi limit.
Regards.

I appreciate the fact that you answered part of the question, but not the first part. Are there any other possibilities other than gas valve? The part costs $160, and that's if I choose to fix it myself, against your advice. I would like cheaper options, if there are any.
