Really? I have had two HP printers and they are all detected out of the box. Some linux distros have an add new printer wizzard like windows. Have you tried that? Sir, did u get any cd's along with the printer?then Pls install software,then go to start-programs-hp(there u can find hpscan.or if u r using xp hten got start-controlpanel-open Scanners&camera(open/add device from here).
Moder Linux distros install and start themselves.if you mean you are taken to a screen try to login with "root" for instance (and password),try the command "startx"-good luck!
