Check to make sure the bolts are not 'left hand threads' which loosen by turning clockwise.

SOURCE: I have a john deere

Hi, sounds like the clutch. If you feel confident you can strip the mechanism down, clean and replace, otherwise its a new clutch.

Replacing flywheel fan on john deere tractor. Once replaced, I start it and all of the fan blades break because the are hitting the screen. How do you create a gap between the blades and the screen?

It is self centering. The "Plastic" fan should have 2 nubs that align into slots/holes on flywheel. The fan must be rotated so that it seats in the flywheel indentations. Then the flywheel bolt and washer anchor the fan in the position required as to not damage fan,

Why isn't the center blade on a john deere LX178

Of course with everything off, reach under the deck and turn the center blade by hand. If:
1. the blade turns by itself and nothing else moves, you need to tighten the retaining bolt more.
2. the blade, retaining bolt and drive shaft turn, check to see if the pulley above it is turning.
a. If the pulley turns freely check that the drive belt is going around it to power the blade.
b. If the blade turns with the drive shaft and the pulley doesn't, check that the pulley is still properly connected to the blade shaft. Some have a key in them that can split, others just have a bolt on top holding them tightly on the shaft.

I wish to know which direction do i turn the bolt to take the cutting blade of a john deere ride on/ clockwise or anticlockwise?

As you are looking at the blade and bolt from under the mower, if the blade is rotating counterclockwise, then the blade bolt is standard threaded and will turn counterclockwise to loosen. If the blade is turning clockwise, then the bolt is left hand threaded and will turn clockwise to loosen. John Deere produces mower decks with both setups.
Good luck!
