Check the linkage from your gear shift to the reverse arm, it might be bent and check the cotter key that connects them.

not a plug , though kinda looks like one , but a neutral safety switch at the transmission (follow the wire to side of trans case)

SOURCE: 2000 chevrolet tahoe - can't put the gear stick in

It sounds to me as if the cable isnt adjusted properly. I would check with the shop that put the tranny in and see if they could check the adjustment on the cable, more than likely when they put in the new trans they didnt bother to adjust the cable for the replacement transmission

If I understand you correctly, you have ALL forward gears working, but reverse doesn't?... then the problem is in the transmission itself or the linkage on the trans linkage into reverse.

Check to ensure that all the bolts holding the fan to the water pump are equally tight.

1976 corvette shifter locked up, goes in revese & neutral only

You're going to have to crawl underneath it, and see what's going on. Your linkage has probably come loose, and the shifter is sliding on the rod, instead of changing gears like it should.

96 escort manual 5 speed stuck in reverse

Is the stick moving? or is it 'stuck' in the reverse position as well? There are adjustments but it seems more likely that your 'stick' has come unstuck from the gear levers that actually put the gears in the right spot. Have someone look at the transmission while you move the stick to see if the levers are moving and put your response here.

Reversing lights

Could be the reverse light switch itself, usually mounted on the gearbox with 2 wires coming from it. If you had a multimeter (set to resistance / ohms) you could check that the switch changes from open to closed by disconnecting the plug on those wires and putting the multimeter across the two terminals. The resistance will be very low with the gear lever in reverse, and very high/open circuit with it not in reverse. Also check that there is battery voltage to one of the terminals.
