Have a Brother multi-functional MFC685Cw. Rarley printed anything with it. Always uploaded any fax and printed it through the office laser. Everyday this thing cleans it self and after 6 months of no printing is out of ink. The thing will now not transfer to the computer so I can see the faxs. It still has some black ink but will not print it. Called the support line they say it does that when it runs out of ink. Solution is to buy more ink. Is there away around this. I started to hate this machine when an ink low message interfered with operation long before it was out of ink. I have several faxes in the thing and they are ransoming them till I buy ink.

On the off chance that this doesn't work you can play out a reset... Be cautioned that this will eradicate any speed dial settings or numbers you have spared in the machine.
Select "Menu"- Select "Introductory Setup"- Select "Reset"- Select "Speed Dial&Fax" and press alright Press "1" to affirm and "1" to reboot the machine.

Does the machine print anything? such as a directory or print when making a copy? I rather suspect it does not. When an incoming fax is recvd does the paper get pulled in and come out blank? If so your problem is with printing (or lack of it). Perform head cleaning. Also make sure the black cartridge still does not have its deal stuck on it. Post again if you still have problem.
Not certain on that model of Brother but on mine I was able to get it to print by changing the settings in "Print Setup" If you change these so that it can only print in black and whiye, it won't look for the colour cartridge, like mine didn't
try to reinstall the printer software. also make sure in control panel, printers and faxes, your printer is the default printer ( v mark on it ) . if not, right click on your printer and choose set as default printer.
This unit cannot be used as a printer unless you purchase a separate special interface

I did a search on Brother and found that they still offer it. Whether it still in stock or not I don't know. Their price is $99.00.

95/98.
Multi-Function Link® is available at most Brother retailers. If you cannot find it,
you can order Multi-Function Link® directly from Brother. The item number is
PCI-1.
