Its dripping water from around the water valve area when the unit is heating
Is this an area w/a threaded fitting?if so ,you turn off waterheater, drain, disconnect existing fitting, clean and rewrap with new teflon tape ,and retighten down.i only say to drain, because i am not sure if it is hanging and would not want to fall on you.teflon tape and rewrenching down should fix, unless soldered.then call your plumber.also if under warr.from installer ,less than 1 yr.,call them and tell them to fix it for free.i have over 13yrs in sheetmetal install, both in hvy.industrial down to many other types of home install of furnaces,a/c units, retrofits in /new and existing homes, waterheaters, garbage disp, refrig.water lines, gas etc

lower your thermostats a bit. If your temperature is set to the hottest setting, then chances are no relief valve will do

I believe the problem you had with the pop off valve is a one time thing since you said you just installed the water h eater
The pop off valve is a pressure relief valve that is activated by build up in the tank from excessive pressure either through too much heat or pressure which works by pressing aginst a spring loaded valve
If you go to the whater heater and look at the valve ther is a handle on it take your hand (stand clear of valve opening) and slowly pull it you will see water start to come out
More than likely a new valve could have had a piece of debris in it or was partially open
re
If the heater was overheating the valve would stay open and you would see extremly hot water rushing out
I do not recommend that you replace the valve unless it continues
Good luck to you

It is most likely the water valve stuck open, telling the controls to heat water, that it thinks is flowing through it, but without actual flow it overheats. Depending on how comfortable you are with taking it apart yourself, you could open the valve to see if it just needs cleaned out, or if you have a ruptured diaphragm or some other cause.

Turn off the electric and drain the tank. Completely remove the exit valve that is leaking and clean up the threads on the valve and in the hole. Get some plumbers dope and dope up the fitting threads and the threads in the hole and then reattach the exit valve. As a real precaution you may consider taking the plastic valve to the hardware store and getting a replacement one. Also dope that one up good.

If your water heater is 10 years old or more, it's much better to replace the entire thing before you start having additional problems with it. You MAY be able to drain your water heater and replace the valve with something more reliable, but, as I've said... if your water heater is old, this is just the 1st thing to go wrong. More will follow.
