In one day I've lost all my external drives folders - 4 HD and 1 jump drive. Data is on discs, but only antivirus scan showing contents. But problem was solved by using search, only one drive remains dead.... I will try another power supply, but for now I'm open to other solutions (if any) Thanks
A biping sound is usually indicative of either a dead drive, or not enough power on the USB bus (for unpowered external drives).
If the drive will take an external power supply, but is not connected to one, try connecting a power supply to it.
If the drive is out of warranty, try removing it from the external enclosure and hook it up internally to the PC. Sometimes the enclosure interface fails. If the drive makes the same noise inside the PC, it's likely dead.
I do data recovery if the data is extremely important to you.http://www.SuperTech-IT.com . If it's not a power issue, you are unlikely to revive this drive unless it's a bad sector, and you have the manufacturer's software to fix it. There's lots of third party software that claim to fix issues like this - and some will - for a time. Problem is if the sectors are not properly mapped, or re-written at the correct increased write current, they won't last, and you'll just wind up here again.
To address some of the other comments posted, the USB cable does not always provide power for external drives. The seagate external unit like the one pictured at the top of this article MUST be powered by an external supply. Many drives that do allow the USB port to power them, may cause this "biping" noise when the port doesn't have enough power to supply the drive. Units like this may work perfectly when plugged into a port on the motherboard, but not on a port cabled to the front of the case, or on an unpowered hub. An error in the master file table is very unlikely to cause this problem unless it has a physically unreadable sector. As for checking the polarity on a power supply, it must also be the same voltage, and AT LEAST the same or greater current than the original supply. For example, if the original supply is 5V at 2A, then a 5V supply at 10A will work fine, but you shouldn't use a 6V supply at 2A or a 5V supply at 1.5A.

You can use it, just make sure that the polarities are the same as the original.
SOURCE: Problem with seeing files on external Hard drive
What has happened is that your file system on the hard drive became corrupt becasue windows had not updated the MFT on the drive. THe MFT is a table of contents regarding whats on your drive.
What happened is similar to someone cutting out a few pages of the table of contents in a book that has a lot of pages.
Windows tried to fix this stupid programming method by asking people to always use the "safely remove hardware" button in the taskbar to force it to update the MFT.
In this case yur a victim of the Hard Discs MFT not updating properly probably because software was accessing the drive when it was disconnected from the machine.
You need to run chkdsk to have it rebuild your MFT.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 <-- How to perform Check disk
*NOTE: Remember to use the drive letter that the USB External is on.. Not just type CHKDSK. It will default to drive C to scan for errors. ex: c:\chkdsk g: (where g is the drive your external usb is)
If you get an error like "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.. see my notes below.
Beware that it will take a LONG TIME to perform this procedure.
If this doesn't fix it.. contact a data recovery specialist.. It's worth the cost. There are two types. Simple and Advanced.
Simple= recovering files your deleted with the delete button (fairly easy with the right software)
Advanced = recovering files from a hard disk crash or file system corruption. (Not easy and very time consuming)

SOURCE: dropped external hd not being recognized
replace the hard drive, as dropping it has rendered it totally useless. be more careful in the future.
