When switching on the camera, the lens would not come out, it displays the message "lens error, restart camera" . I have switched it on and off several times, taken out the batteries, replaced with new batteries, taken out the memmoriy card and went through the procces several times
Take your finger and slide it inside the lens and pull it out slightly, not all the way but enough that it moves. then hit the power button and it should work fine after that. good luck!
Was on a cruise and camera lens would not move. Got the same error message "lens error, restart camera. Could not restart camera. Was about to send camera in to be fixed since I purchased extended warranty. However came to this website and found the solution. Thanks so much! It worked great. This is a money saver and nerve saver also. Great! Great! Great!

The above solution posted by docgoody is awesome, it couldn't be better or easier! It is so easy to do but also very accurate. I rate it 5/5 (100%).
Thanks a lot docgoody!

The FEE error message
Set to F22, or the highest aperture number - normally marked in orange. Note the locking switch.
If the above did not resolve the problem and you still experence the the error display FEE, please contact your local Nikon office. Before doing so please also check the following.
That the EE servo coupling highlighted above on the lenses has not been broken. That the F-min switch highlighted above on the camera body has not been broken. If either of the two items above are broken please contact your local Nikon service center.

I am having the exact same problem with my Canon PowerShot SX100 IS. I turn on the camera, the blue LCD screen lights up momentarily, beeps several times, then states, "Lens error, restart camera." The lens makes no movement at all. After about 6 seconds, the camera shuts itself off. The camera is less than 1 year old.
I turn on the camera, the blue LCD screen lights up momentarily, beeps several times, then states, "Lens error, restart camera."
When I press the power button to turn on the camera the canon blue screen comes on temporarily and then after some beeps a message displays that says: lens error, restart camera. It's so annoying and depressing since the camera is still relatively new? Please help!!!
Your "pull out the lens and power on" fix worked great! I had to pull harder than I expected, but it worked!.
Thank you.
