I recieved a new Sansa e260 for Christmas and installed the Sansa Media Converter, and then connected the device to the computer. However, the Sansa Media Converter (version 1.1.2.74)and Windows Media Player (version 10.00.00.4036) don't recognize the player. The screen on the e260 says 'Connected' and has the arrows going back & forth. Windows Device Manager lists Sansa e260 under 'Windows Portable Devices' and when I click on that it says Location is Location 0 (Sansa e260)and that "This device is working properly". I've downloaded and installed the Sansa Updater and checked for updated versions of the device drivers. I've rebooted the computer (Windows XP, Service Pack 2) but still no luck neither the Sansa Media Converter or Windows Media Player recognize the device. Is there more I can try?
I agree with the above suggestion. Try setting the USB Mode under "Settings" on "MSC" on the Sansa. My computer would not recognize the e260 when the mode was set to "MTP"; works fine on "MSC".
Figured out the advice. It did work for me.
what you need to do is in the MP# drive (not the Computer)
1/ Go to settings
2/ go to USB Mode
3/ Change to MSC from MTP
When I re-connected the MP3 player magically appeared as a Sansa drive!
Problem Solved. Hope this helps someone somewhere
If you have an E260 v2 and your computer won't recognize it, do the following:
1) Download the sansa firmware updater from the sandisk website (http://mp3support.sandisk.com/sansa/Installer/1082/SansaUpdaterInstall.exe).
2) The program then turn off your sansa. (unplug it first).
3) Now move the hold button to the right and then hold down the center (round) button and then the power button.
4) Once your sansa is on, you can stop pressing the other buttons.
5) Now plug in your sansa.
6) Once this is done, your firmware updater should automatically start. If it doesn't, go to C:\programfiles\sandisk\.... and open it.
7) Select the most recent firmware and download it (it should automatically install).
8) Once this is done, disconnect your mp3 player (your firmware will then update).
9) Turn your mp3 player off.
10) Turn your mp3 player on.
11) go to Settings, USB Settings, and select MSC.
12) plug your MP3 player back into your computer and it should now recognize it.
I know this wont help everybody, and I am not sure why it helped me even....I have about 6 USB ports throughout my computer. I connected it with one, and was pulling my hair out for an hour. I tried it in a different USB port, and it recognized it right away. Bill Gates, I don't know why you toy with us like you do...
After reading all these solutions I called up Customer service, since I had the same problem. My laptop does not recognize Sansa e260 connection. He asked me what versions were my Operating system and the Windows Media Player. It turns out that my OP was fine - Windows XP SP2. However, my media player was version 9. Following his advice, I went to Microsoft.com and downloaded WMP version 10.
Thankfully, it has been working great since then. He told me that since I had the e260 v2, it was necessary that I had these updated versions.

I went to mode, but there's no "mtp" or "msc" mine only says either "rhapsody" or "playsforsure" anyone know what I'm talking about or have a solution? anything?
Used to have this problem. Open converter and then plug in the device. It usually takes a couple seconds for the converter to recognize it. Then it should show a pic of the device in the top left corner with the memory shown right below it.
Oddly, switching USB ports worked like a charm for me. A yellow bubble popped up telling me that I had to connect the MP3 player to a faster port, and when I switched it, the computer suddenly recognized it perfectly and it began to charge. Excellent. Thanks to whoever suggested this. Hope it helps.

I too had the MTP device error. Went to Settings > Mode > changed to Rhapsody and it works fine for me. I would change it back to PlaysForSure after your done if thats what it was on.
I hav d same problem of my laptop not detecting my sansa e260 i installed firmware updater but it doesnt work either when i try openin it via c drive it says "sansa updater can only be launched by sansa service" ..
also i tried going to settings to change it to msc from usb but i cant find usb mode ..

I have the same problem that i dont see the USB mode option in Settings. I tried installing the firmware... it got installed on the PC, but it doesnt seem to do anything after that when i connected the player to the PC.

I had the same problem. You have to go into the settings and change from MTP mode to MSC mode before you hook the device to the computer.
I have the same problem but the e260 I purchased is model e260/v2 (look at the back of the player at the very right bottom). I called Sansa and was told this model does not have an option of changing from MTP to MSC mode. It comes in MPT mode only. Now what?

These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.
Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced.
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp
If these fail, then:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version).
You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer.

Same situation with the e260 saying it is connected, but not being recognised by XP SP2. And I don't have a "change USB" setting in my e260's menu, so I can't try that suggestion (which is from the user's guide).
I am having the same problem, though am unable to try the solutions as I don't understand how to change the USB setting?

Same problem, I am running w2000. It works on 2 xp machines but not the w2000, Media player is 9 but on the xp machines it is 10
It shows conected however, the Sansa Media Converter does not find the player. Says it needs Quic Time. I uninstalled and reinstalled Quick Time back again and no way, it does not find it.
My player says connected, but while using Rhapsody, it won't recognize device. I try to add a device and a message pops up saying needs updating. It updates, complete, but there are no devices added. When I try using the sansa converter, on the left it keeps saying "connect device".

I have a Sansa e260 too. When I connect it to my PC, it connects and reconnects repeatedly. It is not recognized about 95% of the time. The other 5 percent it will be recognized, and I can sync with WMP11; however it is very touchy about staying recognized. I find numerous errors in the event log stating: MTP WPD Driver has failed to start. Error 0x8007001f. The device manager show the device connected, but lists it as "Unknown Device". I have tired un-installing and reinstalling it many times with no luck.
I have the same problem with the Sansa e260. XP SP2 does not reconize the device. Was told by Sansa to install the MS PortingPack (mtppk12.exe). PortingPack did not help.

I plugged in my new Sansa e260 v2 into my 1.0 USB port, (I'm running Windows XP with SP2) and all i get is a screen indicating i'm "connected" with two arrows going back and forth. My computer doesn't recognize the e260 so i can't update its' firmware. i keep reading suggestions to switch my USB mode from "Settings" i don't seem to have an USB mode option on this model or it's very well hidden.

Make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player. It needs to be version 10 or 11. Once I upgraded my media player, it recognized my MP3 right away! :-)
I meant to add one other thing. My Sansa e260 didn't have the USB option under Settings either. However, I installed the Sansa Firmware Updater software (available on SanDisk's website under "Downloads" at the top of the page) and there was a newer version of the firmware available. The firmware updater software will step you through setting it up on your computer and will prompt you to plug and unplug your MP3 player to initiate the upgrade of the latest firmware. Once you've updated your firmware on your MP3 player, the USB option will show under Settings. It defaults to Auto Detect for MTP or MSC mode. The Sansa Firmware Updater will also automatically check for updates each time you plug in your MP3 player to your computer so you'll always know when there's newer versions available.

Computer won't recognize the device. It says that it was not intalled properly. Also I have the e260v2 device and it does not have a usb option under settings so I can't change it to msc mode.
I'm having the same issue; however, I set up the Sensa Updater
on my pc, and when it tells me to plug in the unit, I do so, and click
'Finish', it says the updater will start automatically, but nothing
appears on the screen, and the unit says it is disconnected.

My problem is slightly different. My Sansa E260 will sync with Windows Media player, and after I updated the firmware, I can change between USB modes, however, Sansa media converter does not recognize it no matter what mode it is in, or what sequence I plug it in. My wife also has an E-260 and it sees hers just fine. The end result is that I can't load in pictures or video, although a couple mysteriously ended up on there when I synced it-They must have somehow strayed into media player. Other than that, it works fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I recently bought (Dec 2008) a refurbished Sansa e260 which came without anything but the player. But it worked just fine at first with the computer recognizing it. I put a 2 gig chip in it and added more data. Now I can't get the computer to recognize it with or without the chip and I get the message on my MP3 that I need to delete some data, that more space is needed for "housekeeping" (my word). But I can't get at the data!!!
