Whirlpool 21.0 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator with IceMagic Plus Ice Maker Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 15, 2012

I have a Whirlpool fridge with top freezer.

This morning about 10 am I noticed that both the top and bottom doors were open, not enough for the lights to be on, just barely open. When I checked, things were starting to thaw. I closed them and now about 3 hours later, things are still thawing and the refrigerator is just barely cool. The freezer has kicked on, but the air coming out of it is just barely cool also. Whats wrong please?!

SOURCE: Refrigerator not cooling--has thawed/ but top freezer is cooling

Their is a fan that blows the cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator section, on some models. If thsi fan is  frozen or bad what you havwe discribed wil bew the result.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Top-Mount Refrigerator Freezer warm, cracking noise

8yr old? Buy a new one. The cracking sound is from expansion and contraction of the cabinet and ice cooling or defrosting. It can be as simple as a bit of a top up of refrigerant, but can also be that your compressor has worn down the valve plates and therefore is not producing sufficient pressure throught the system.

SOURCE: Refrigerator is not cold on top, but still cold on bottom.

Sounds as if you have a bad evep. Fan motor. It souldnt by over $40.00. And if the unit still look and works good other than this problem. It's located behind the inside back freezer panel. Diffaculty level in my opinion is a 5 out of a scale of 1 to 10. 10

Testimonial: "Thanks for the help! It appears that is the problem as the fan does not spin. I will try to find a new motor tomorrow and replace it. "

SOURCE: Whirlpool, water puddles on top shelf of fridge

If it is not from a plugged or misaligned defrost drain tube, then it is always from air leaking into your refer section. Check you door gasket to see if it is sealing correctly all around your door. Make sure your door is shutting tightly every time. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.

Testimonial: "Great info, easy to understand... hopefully the fix is as easy as the explanation!"

How to remove doors of a whirlpool 6vmw47 top mount fridge/freezer

Hello Hicherringto,

I understand that you would like instructions on how to remove the doors on your fridge. Most common on top mount freezers/fridges you need to start at the top and work your way down.

1. Locate the freezer hinge top part where the door swings.
2. Remove the plastic cover over the henge. (top of the box if covered)
3. Remove the screws holding the henge in place.
4. Lift up on the henge
5. Open the freezer door and lift up (the door should lift off the bottom pin)
6. Open the Fridge door and remove the screws from the hinge that the freezer door sat on
7. Remove the hinge from the fridge door by lifting up
8. Open and lift up on the fridge door
9.Reinstall in reverse

That is the easiest way to remove the doors on a top mount freezer fridge. Note that when you reinstall the doors you will have to adjust the hinges so that the seals seal properly. The hinges have enough of a grove that you use them to adjust the doors.

Thank you for choosing FIxYa.com

Whirlpool Fridge

I have a Whirlpool Gold refrigerator, model GB9SHDXP, about 2 and a half years old. It has a bottom freezer. Yesterday I noticed that the food in the top part were not as cold as usual. I came back...

ok,when you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?all that happens is the freezer gets cold,a fan in the back wall of the freezer turns on and blows cold air up into the fridge section,a thermostat tells it when it's cold enough or it's getting warm then it will blow more air up top,if the freezer is working correctly then either the fan isn't working or the bottom freezer door was left open, warm air got sucked up into the air vents causing water droplets to be formed, then they freeze blocking the air vents with ice and now the cold air can't go into the fridge section.is there any ice on the ceiling of the freezer or frozen water droplets on the bags in the freezer?if so the door was left open.unplug the maction, and with a hair dryer blow the hot air into the holes on the back panel, keep doing this until you don't see any more water draining through the holes, turn it back on and see if the cold air is blowing up into the fridge.if the evap fan motor is bad the part number is W10128551 and it's around 25 to 30 dollars.you must of got the model number off of the book,it's not the full model number, check in the fridge section on the right hand wall near the ceiling and you should see a tag with the number on it.also down at the bottom kickplate, you can remove the kickplate and there should be a tech sheet tucked away in it,read it and it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost mode,if you can do this, instead of unplugging it if you have to melt it out with the hair dryer you can put it into defrost so the heater will come on and this will help you to defrost the vents quicker.let me know what you find and if you need any more help.good luck with your machine

Check if it is still under warranty - I think that it is usually 2 years.

When in this condition, was the compressor still running ?
There was one issue that occurred occasionally on some models - the fridge door has a height adjustment so you can level the 2 doors up. Sometimes, it drops a bit too much, and on models with the fridge door light switch on the top (not the side), it meant that it wasn't turning off the light. Some have 2 lamps (commonly 40W or more each), so you effectively have 80Watts or more of heating running constantly. If your (exact) model has the door switch on the side, this is Unlikely to be the issue.

If the compressor was not running, I could say something like "it might have got stuck in a defrost cycle", but this DOESN'T really fit with the operation of these fridges (no defrost elements in the fridge side).
Does this help in any way ??

Amana ARB2117BW - Bottom Freezer Door Won't Stay Sealed

This problem was posted in the wrong section. My model didn't have it's own, so its in ABB1927DE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - perhaps you could create a section for it.

As it turns out, I looked more closely at the baskets inside. We had noticed that if the top basket was slid all the way forward when we closed the door that it would close better. So I looked to see if they or the slides were out of alignment. They seemed ok, but then I saw that the way the bottom basket was hanging didn't seem right - it was not quite nestled into it's retainer slot. I took the baskets out and turned the bottom one around. It fit perfectly into it's retainer slot. I then replaced the top one (it was already in correctly) and closed the door. It sealed correctly the first time. I tested it several times after that and it sealed tightly. Closing the top door did not make it unseal as it had done before.
