Everytime i start the laptop the diagnostics run automatically ... even if i let it complete the process and it says machine is fine, the next time i start it up the diagnostics run again ... very irritating
What Diagnostics? Is this before the system completes the boot process or is this after windows has booted up and the desktop with icons appears?
Testimonial: "Thanks Milton."
Click Start/Programs and look for the RUN command. It might be under Accessories depending on your operating system.
When you click RUN and it opens type: msconfig.exe and Press OK.
When the System Configuration window opens click the General tab and make sure Diagnostic Startup is not checked. Most like the Selective Startup will be checked (that's ok).
Next click the Boot.Ini tab and make sure NO boot options are checked or selected. Boot Options will be under the button that says Check All Boot Options. Nothing should have a check by it under Check All Boot Options (SafeBoot, NoGuiBoot, BootLog, BaseVideo & SOS should not be checked).

SOURCE: how to reset the Dell D531 laptop
Hello,
The easiest way to reset your Dell is to use the system restore function:
Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tool> System Restore.
You can chose to restore to an eailer setting or create a new one. If you want to completly restore the system, use the operating system disk that came with your notebook to restore your os without deleting all your data.
Good Luck

SOURCE: Windows Vista Start up problem, reboots automatically.
Boot to recovery console using XP CD, run CHKDSK /R and see if that resolves.
If no go, try a reinstall of windows, if still no go, then replace HDD
AS YOU ON THE SYSTEM AND EVEN BEFORE WINDOWS
STARTS KEEP PRESSING THE F8 KEY CONTINUEOUSLY. A MENU WILL APPEAR. SELECT SAFE
MODE AND ENTER. WINDOWS WILL LOAD IN SAFE MODE. THIS WILL SOLVE SOME OF YOUR
PROBLEMS. NOW RESTART THE SYSTEM IN NORMAL
MODE.
IF THIS DOES NOT WORK SELECT "LOAD WINDOWS
WITH LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION " AND THEN RESTART. THIS WILL SURELY
SORT OUT YOUR PROBLEM.
PLS REPLY OR COMMENT. THANKS

Before windows completes the boot process ... as soon as the machine starts up ... I think that maybe there is a minor problem that is autoinvoking the diagnostics for even after we let the diagnostics tool run in full, the problem persists. thx for helping.
and perhaps the problem is not so severe as to cause the machine to malfunction??
thx Milton ... it seems that the switch had a trickle and this caused the system to continually run the diagnostics on every startup/reboot.
