E40 fault code is water level too low during heat which is very strange to appear at start-up. does anything else happen? without being certain, points to a main module fault

E40 is a door lock fault code, you need to replace the door lock,
you cannot reset the fault code, this happens automatically when the fault is rectified. nice easy job though.
I've just bought one of these machines, and the manual says the E40 warning means the door is not properly closed. Seems like that would be obvious if it were true, but maybe check that it is closing completely.
E40 is an error from the door locking mech (interlock).this is the bit
behind the port hole door frame ,where the door
striker pin goes through hole.hope this helps you.held on with 2 screws

The E40 error code indicates a loss of electrical power usually but not always due to the door not shutting properly or not locking. But, since you smelled burning it could be any electrical short that blew a fuse and shut the machine down. It could also be the motor windings with the internal overload protector shutting it down.

Perhaps the water pressure into the filler is not high enough? Have you checked the water supply pipes that go to the rear of the machine?
