I had same problem on 3/28/09.
According to Magellan and other people who have experienced the same problem, this is terminal to the unit. It can be caused by downloading the 08/09 Magellan map
upgrade, which can cause the unit to permanently lock up. Magellan is well aware of the problem, and should offer to replace your unit if you have the problem. If you elect to have it repaired, Magellan can download the map upgrade for you in the repair process. Here is a site noting the same problem:

Questions for Magellan: 1) why would they sell, in 2009, gps units with old 2007 maps loaded in them, requiring the purchaser to buy a current map, and 2) if there is a problem with downloading the current maps, why is there not an advisement or warning to the installer.
Other than replacing the unit, there appears to be no "fix".
Exactly the same problem occurred when I tried to upgrade my 4250. I sent a support request to Magellan. They sent back some suggestion which I tried to no avail. I am awaiting their next response.
I have the same problem with my 2 month old 4040. After downloading the 2.62 update from magellan site, I tried to update according to the simple instructions. The 4040 is now stuck on the welcome sreen with the frozen black loading bar at the bottom. Waiting for Magellan's response.
Any good experience, solutions?
I have a Magellan Maestro 4250 and it is also frozen at the start up bar is all the way loaded but it just won't turn over. I can re-input the software as the computer won't reconize it since it won't start up. Please help someone as their website hasn't answered me yet.
