I have 2 sets of Compaq Presario M2000 Laptop Battery. One I use regularly, the other as backup battery when I am using laptop outdoors and no power outlet readily available. While battery is connected, and power adapter is connected while using the laptop and simultaneously charging it, after a while, it died down. I tried removing the battery and just connected the power adaptor, but it doesn't power on. 1. Then, disconnected the power adaptor cord and just connected the laptop battery, it turned on. While turned on using just the laptop battery, I connected the power adapter cord again, it immediately turned off. I repeated 1, and it functioned well, till the battery fully discharged by way of usual usage. I tried connecting the power adapter that turns of my M2000 laptop, to another HP500 laptop, and it turned on that laptop properly and charges the same laptop just fine. So, the power adapter charger is fine and is not a problem. Then, back to my M2000, I replaced the 1st depleted laptop battery with my fully charged backup M2000 Laptop Battery, and it turns on properly and I can use my M2000 laptop normally, until this backup battery also gets totally depleted. And same case as 1., it turns off as soon as I reconnect the power adaptor charger that functions well on the other HP500 laptop, with the same voltage and amperage rating as with my M2000 laptop. One thing I observed, is that, with or without the laptop battery, as soon as I connect the power adaptor charger to its charger socket, it sparks momentarily, but visible. But still works fine when I disconnect the charger cord and just use the battery with some power remaining. What is wrong with this and How do I fix it? Charger IC? Mosfet? Please help me...
1) The AC adapter should ALWAYS be plugged into the laptop FIRST, then plugged into AC power. If not, this could create a voltage spike.
2) Let's look at the DC Power Jack, for the Compaq Presario M2000 series of Notebook PC's,
http://www.notebookparts.com/products/description.php?II=9741
The DC Power Jack is mounted to a removable circuit board.
Enlarging the view of the jack, shows us there is an Inductor.
The small 'can' standing up on the power board. This chipset could have gone south. (Bad)
How to know? Replace it, or dig out your dual trace oscilloscope. See if the Inductor works.
Could also just be cracked solder joints, of the DC Power Jack, TO that small circuit board. Solution would be to resolder it/them.
[ I WOULD however, search for a BETTER price, than listed in the link above, IF available ]
DC Power Jack is in good shape, soldered tight to the motherboard, and ruled out as the problem?
(Since you know the AC adapter is good)
Then the problem would be the Inductor on that power board, or power correcting chipset.
What one is it? Dunno.
DO KNOW is has J leads on the bottom.
CAN give examples, and perhaps you can identify using them.

Ouch!
You may have damaged a power controller chip like the MAX1999 or another.
If you had no problems before replacing the RAM I would say that you shorted a MOSFET and it will need to be replaced.
Or another part. That cannot be diagnosed well via forums.
Typically an 8-pin chip. like 4407/4411/4431 or 48xx series. Cannot tell which one, because I don't know where the screwdriver slipped nor can I see & test the board.
good luck
