NN-T990SA Panasonic Microwave Stopped Heating

Well this sure stinks. For the last week the microwave has been making this high pitch squeeling noise for about ten seconds before it made its usual heating hum. The other morning it stopped making that noise and no hum anymore either. The fan runs, the turntable turns the timer times but it won't heat. Also the timer when set for one minute goes for exactly 22 seconds after starting and then the machine completely shuts down. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My microwave will run 3 seconds and automatically shot off. Does anyone have a solution for fix?

Light and timer continue to work, but the microwave no longer heats! HELP!

For a few times, it helped if I unplugged and replugged the unit: sometimes this process resulted in correct operation, but now it doesn't help at all. I have tried all the different functions, e.g., cook, defrost, melt, etc. No heat.

    MAG WAS BAD ALSO

  • Mike Leonard Apr 25, 2008

Well, here's my story: my Panasonic microwave [NN-S262BF, with inverter] recently failed. It would only run for 2 seconds, making a clicking sound, then shut off. Being a do-it-yourselfer, I searched online for my symptoms and suspected the magnetron. I bought a new one for only $40 at partstore.com, and replaced it.
After reassembly, it did indeed run for 2 minutes and boil 8 ounces of water -- success! Or so I thought... after I reinstalled it over the stove, it failed again with the same exact symptoms. Argh...
So, back to the internet and I even called a local repair shop. They convinced me the problem was the inverter, so I bought a new one for $162 at partstore.com. I just completed that surgery this evening, and now it runs for precisely 23 seconds and shuts off -- never clicking, never heating. Now I'm cursing and losing DIY points with the wife :(
So, my latest theory is that the bad inverter fried my magnetrons, but it'll cost me another $40 for a new one to find out. Does any one out there actually know anything about this stuff and can give me any advice? The unit is 5 year and 4 months old (just outside the 5-year magnetron warranty), and I had to replace the PC board a few years ago when it failed.
    Thanks in advance!

nn ct559 our microwave lamp stopped working so I obtained a replacement and fitted it. This seemed very straightforward but now the turntable turns when the microwave is not in use, but stops working vwhen we start the microwave. I know that this sounds really odd but I'm sure I didn't touch anything else when I fitted the lamp. Any ideas anyone?

I have a Samsung SMH1816S that will only turn off if unplugged. It did not give me an error code, but if I shut the door it runs, and heats water, even though the light is not on and the turntable is not going. I can use the control panel to set time, and then the light will turn on and the turntable will go, but once it beeps that it is ended, the microwave goes dark but keeps running and heating. The only thing that stops it is opening the door.

This model uses an inverter to produce high voltage instead of a convential transformer system. While an inverter (switched-mode power supply) is more efficient from a power consumption standpoint, it is more complex, thus more statistically prone to fail. These should only be examined and worked on by someone who has the necessary technical qualifications. Seriously. Often the machine-soldered connections in a microwave inverter are too weak, so they eventually fail, especially if heat is high in the area. They sometimes fail catastrophically. When not catastrophically damaged, you may hear clicking or squealing and may smell an electrical odor, which is sometimes obscured by the cooling fan. Some manufacturers do not encourage or assist technicians to repair microwave inverters. Most offer the inverter as a whole assembly. But sometimes that is actually cheaper than the time and labor required to fix the old one. If a technician is willing and able to troubleshoot and repair the inverter to component level, it will may be expensive, but may be worth it, especially if he or she will resolder and reinforce connections as needed as part of a thorough repair. That could easily make your inverter beter than a new one! You might be able to get some verbal estimates if you call Panasonic-authorized repair shops and ask then specifically about inverter repair and inverter replacement costs for your model number.

SOURCE: my microwave says "child" and won't play anymore

Not sure of the TT series models but for the NN series models the procedure is as follows:-

If "Child" is displayed in the display window, then the child safety lock is on.

To remove the child safey lock, press the "Stop/Reset" button 3 times in fairly short succession (less than 3 seconds). The time of day or just the Colon sign (:) is then displayed

If you later want to apply the Child safety lock, then, when the time of day (or colon sign) is displayed, press "Start" 3 times (again in short succession).

Hope this helps

Take long time to Mack hot food

your magnetron is the heating element. it sends out microwaves that jiggle the water molecules inside the food causing them to heat. this is whats malfunctioning causing your problem. youll have to have a technician replace it

We had a bad power surge during a storm last week which fried my Panasonic NN-T990saf. My question is it worth trying to get it repaired or should I just buy a new micro wave?

Although lightning damage is normally fatal to anything with electronics inside, you might remove the back panel and look for fuse holders. If you find one (minimum) or two (likely), replace them (if you have a cheap multimeter you can check for continuity) and see  if it will turn on. You may have to do a little telephone work to locate the high current fuse which is probably 30 amps.
If you live in an area of frequent lightning strikes, investing in a 'whole house' surge arrester makes sense. These are installed in the main breaker box and any brand I've seen comes with a $10-25,000 insurance policy to replace any dead appliances that fail despite the surge protector. They cost $150-250 US plus installation which you can save if you are afraid to DIY.
