I'm not surprised that it advances on the end. The VCR doesn't know where the end of the taped programme is. You will have to search manually for it. Start at the end of the tape and rewind a few minutes worth of recording then press 'play' and see what you get. If not successful rewind further and try again, etc,etc. Alternatively you could press "play +rewind" which should allow you to watch the record on what is fast (=x2) rewind. It will help you if you know how long the show was and at what point the tape was when recording started.
The most likely cause is a problem with the mechanism that moves the tape(when played a bit more weight is on the takeup reel.
Someone would have to open the unit so they can see the reels moving---watch to see if it begins to hesitate when further into the tape.
A trick that can help to see is put a fully rewound tape in and hit fast forward--let it go all the way to the end and rewind--if unit does not stop after doing that see what happens in play.
A worn drive unit that moves the tape can sometimes get better after run this way.
There should be a rewind button on the front of the main unit (usually indicated by either REW or 2 arrows pointing to the left), this should be next to the fast forward (again indicated by either F-FWD or 2 arrows pointing to the right) as well as PLAY and STOP - for the VCR. The only thing you would need the remote for is to set the clock and/or perform setup for the DVD player as well as timer recording. Try a universal remote which will make fast forward, play, stop, record (to VHS) and rewind easier.
Found no info in manual but cleaned tape heads and able to watch tapes. I don't know if this completely fixed problem because tape watched was not best quality.
try a cleaning tape first - best not to rewind
the cleaning tape because it will put back the
crud previously removed ? into your heads and
guides ( last tape to play is prime suspect ) ;
- -
digital heads wear faster than analog so a
new set of heads is next possibility but if the
cleaning tape works . . . retire your library
soon as possible .
