I am experiencing a sudden "ghost" print quality with my HL-2040. It was printing great and with no warning (no lights) I started getting extremely light printouts. I tried replacing the toner cartridge to no avail. I don't want to spend the $$ for a new drum because I did not experience a gradual quality fade. Any ideas?
Try cleaning the drum cylinder with alcohol and a cotton ball. Then swipe the corona wire cleaner back and forward making sure to return it to the correct place. Try a print. If it is improved - replace the drum at earliest convenience. If not improved - could be dirty laser lenses or problem with the fuser.

NEWER MODLES HAVE A CARTRIGE ESTIMATING PROGRAM THAT NEEDS RESET (you need to tell the printer that it has a new cartrige). SIMPLY....
1. OPEN THE FRONT COVER.
2. TURN OFF.
3. HOLD DOWN THE GO BUTTON AND TURN BACK ON.
4. ONCE ALL 3 LIGHTS ARE SOLID, LET GO OF THE BUTTON & PRESS IT 2 TIMES RIGHT AWAY.
5. ALL LIGHTS SHOULD GO SOLID AGAIN, WHEN THEY DO PRESS THE GO BUTTEN 5 TIMES IN A ROW.
THIS SHOULD RESET YOUR PRINTER AND LET IT KNOW IT HAS A NEW CARTRIGE (even if it doesn't)!

Drum needs replacing, normal consumable, possible faulty toner hard to know when you use non gen items.

this is the problem of scanner assebbly (lense section), So open this section & clean the scanner after that your printer will work properly.

Copier tech here. :P I just had to look this up. looked to the internet first, before going to find a manual.
open front door (the door for toner and drum units)
hold Go untill all four lights are on.
Release Go
Shut door
good to go.
Have a good night ya all.
