Turned on my 2004 Panasonic 46" last night (exactly four years old this month - it should last much longer than this) and it made a loud 'popping' noise followed by a colorful, thin, horizontial line across the middle of the TV screen.
Any suggestions on how to diagnose this problem would be greatly appreciated. Repair men tell me they want $100 just to look at it and the amount will NOT be applied toward the cost to repair; if it's worth repairing. I'd be upset if there is something I can do ahead of time to troubleshoot whether it's even worth fixing before paying $100 for someone to tell me the same thing.
Thanks for your help,

This is pure conjecture but I think the cooling fan has failed or is running slow.
Check to see if it can still be heard.
This system seems to be a bit weak on reliability.

Probably vertical output IC451. I just changed one and is working perfectly now. On CRT tvs, loss of vertical drive will result in a thin white line across center of screen. In these projection sets the vertical and horizontal are fedback and used for convergence. Loss of vertical will cause shutdown same a power supply failure.
