Heres my problem and I would be very grateful for some help here... i cant watch dvd's. First happened half way through a movie, and it has failed to play either the end of that movie and no others will play monger than a couple of minutes. Issue: When playing a dvd, system resets, in that the power goes off and then comes back on again (coupled with a thump thump from the sub). If in a different mode, issue goes away. If i unplug the subwoofer section, the problem persists in disc mode, but seems fine in the other modes, i.e. no reset. So by elimination, I dont think it is the subwoofer unit. I opened the unit cant see any leaking capacitors/ blown capacitors to change. The drive and lens are clean so it is not that either. It is always plugged into a power conditioner unit so spikes should not be responsible. Hopefully someone else has had a similar issue, the unit is just less than 10 years old now... but its such a nice sound I want to fix it rather than bin a perfectly good speaker system.

It sounds like you are describing an earth loop problem. I won't go into detail in this post, but try an isolation test first. disconnect everything from the reciever except the sub and try connecting say a BATTERY powered mp3 player or cd player to minimise connections to the electrical mains earth. you could also isolate things by taking your sub to a friend's house and trying it on their system.
If it is an earth loop use a process of elimination to find out which two pieces of equipment causes the earth loop. then apply filtering.
you can buy earth loop isolation transformers for about AU$26 and I've used one on my sub myself. Theyhave RCA (phono)plugs on each end and they connect inline with the signal cable to the sub amp.
as for the thumping sound it might be the speaker protection circuitry cutting off the amp to protect the subwoofer speaker from damaged. This might be triggered if the earth loop sound is causing the sub amp to overload and clip.
Failing this there might be a dried out overheated electro capacitor in the amp circuit causing the hum. Hav a chat to your local electronics person, who should be able to spot it!
Hope this puts you on the right track
Happy Hunting!

Well, I have recently inherited one from a family member, but this one came with the same issue. I simply drilled a small hole into the metal grating, completely bypassing the circuit boards inside. I reconnected a piece of fresh speaker wire to the sub, and had that plugged into my receiver. Now, not only can I boost my sub, I can also control its volume.(It didn't come with the remote either!)

No one has any ideas of a fix, does anyone know how to rewire the subwoofer cable input to receive a different dvd player so i don't have to send the whole lot to landfill?
Ok so thats 2 of us needing help with this issue.
I mailed Harman, the parent company for JBL, who gave me a contact email for UK service agent, yet they failed to recontact me back after 2 tries. So nil point for the aftersales service. Albeit a 10 year old piece of kit.
Also to update the 'issue' I found that testing the unit, the power fails and restarts in ALL modes now, not just the DVD mode. With or without subwoofer being connected.
