No watch is "water proof." As a matter of fact, there's a U.S. law on the books that watches (and other equipment) can only be described as "water resistant," since nothing other than a solid object can completely shed water.

All that said, the 10 ATM designation is meant to convey that when the watch was new, it was supposed to withstand up to 10 atmospheres of external pressure--which would translate into being about 300-330 feet underwater. That's pretty water proof in my book.

HOWEVER, and this is a big caveat, a watch's water resistance rating is based on its condition at the time that it left the factory. Over time, the little gaskets that help keep water out of the watch will begin to wear and provide less water resistance. In particular, official factory servicing states that the neoprene gasket between the case and caseback of the watch should be replaced every time that you change the battery. In fact, most people, including me, re-use that gasket if it still looks pretty good when I open the watch. That definitely compromises the factory water resistance rating.

Bottom line: If you have a watch rated for 10 ATM of water resistance that's a few years old, I wouldn't be all that concerned about getting it casually wet, or even going swimming with the watch (I'm paranoid enough that I wouldn't do this, but I'm probably in the minority). However, I wouldn't go diving with a watch that's had its battery replaced unless it was re-tested for water resistance after the battery was serviced. Some but not all jewelers have special machines that perform this test. If you're interested, you could probably pay one of them a few dollars to have your watch tested. They don't have to do anything to the watch other than place it in their machine, so it's not a big deal for someone who has the equipment to perform this test.

On some watches the winder needs to be turn anticlockwise about a quarter of the turn before pulling it out.

Water Resistant is a common mark stamped on the back of wrist watches to indicate how well a watch is sealed against ingress of water. It is usually accompanied by an indication of the static test pressure that a sample of newly manufactured watches was exposed to in a leakage test. The test pressure can be indicated either directly in bars, or (more commonly) as an equivalent water depth in meters (in the United States sometimes also in feet).
An indication of the test pressure in terms of water depth does not mean a water resistant watch was designed for repeated long term use in such water depths. For example, a water resistant watch marked at 30 meters depth cannot be expected to withstand activity for longer time periods in a swimming pool, let alone continue to function at 30 meters under water. This is because the test is conducted only once using static pressure on some of the newly manufactured watches. The test for qualifying a diving watch for repeated usage in a given depth includes safety margins to take factors in account like aging of the seals, rapidly changing water pressure and temperature, as well as dynamic mechanical stresses encountered by a watch. Also every diving watch has to be fully tested for water resistance.

The most common failure of a watch to be water resistant is caused by a faulty contact between the case at an opening around the glass, crown, or pushbutton and the opening's gasket. Worn or defective rubber O-rings are often a cause of failure. Condensation forming under the crystal of a watch following a sharp temperature change (a swim after a stretch in the sun, for example) tells you to have the watch checked without delay. This can be an indication of additional moisture elsewhere inside the case. It is also the only water-tightness check a consumer can perform.
Of course non-water-resistant watches don't contain the additional seals and gaskets found on water-resistant models. Consequently, moisture-laden air can easily enter the case. Once inside, a pronounced change in temperature may cause condensation to form under the crystal. Very little can be done to prevent this. A high-quality water-resistant watch, however, properly serviced and maintained, will be sealed to prevent internal water damage and will more than outlast an ordinary watch.
To keep the watch properly sealed, replace any defective parts , such as gaskets, crystals, and crowns. Water-resistant watches should be tested for case tightness at least once a year, as well as every time the watch is opened, such as when a battery is replaced.

1. Locate the screw on the side of the watch face. This screw is what you will use to set the time on your watch. Water-resistant watches have a screw-type crown, and the screw must be turned toward the body (unscrewed) before it can be pulled out for further use. If the watch is not water-resistant, the unscrewing is unnecessary.
   
2. 2 Pull the screw gently outward. The screw can be pulled outward in two positions. The first position sets the date and day. Pull the screw out farther (into the second position) to set the time.
   
3. 3 Turn the screw either clockwise or counterclockwise to move the minute and hour hands to the desired time. Push the screw all the way in (and turn it away from the body if you have the water-resistant model) when you are finished.

4. 1 Locate the three buttons on the side of the watch face. These are the buttons used to set the time. The top button is the "+" indicator for increasing the numbers. The bottom button is the "-" indicator for decreasing numbers. The center button is to activate the setting mode.
   
5. 2 Press the center button in for one second. The watch will beep.
   
6. 3 Press the top "+" button for two seconds. After the watch beeps, you can begin setting the time.
   
7. 4 Press either the "+" button or the "-" button (depending on whether you want to increase or decrease the numbers) to set the time.
   
8. 5 Press the center button when you are finished. The watch will beep. This validates the setting. The seconds will revert to zero.
