Defrosting issue or need to replace refrigerator?

The refrigerator was made in July 1999. My wife noticed the the fridge is very warm in one particular location. This location is on the front edge of the fridge between the freezer and the fridge; Both the freezer door and the fridge door must be opened to access this location (it is above the control panel in the ceiling of the fridge). The floor of the freezer is cold. The ceiling of the fridge is cold. The freezer door was dripping a little water for a number of hours but has stopped. The water drip has gone away and has not re-occurred. The warm area has gone away as well. Is this an issue or is it just a defrost cycle that we noticed?

Refrigerator troubleshooting

Maybe the thermostat needs replacing.
or
maybe the compressor needs replacing
or
maybe you are short of coolant or have a coolant leak.
or maybe something even more serious.
I am not an expert, and don't know the most cost effective solution. For my problem, with a small freezer it is cheaper to buy a new one than have someone come out to define and repair the problem.

Refrigerator too warm

If this is a bog-standard fridge... then its the freezer compartment which actually cools the rest of the fridge. Air needs to circulate throughout the fridge... is the freezer compartment full of ice and need defrosting... if so, do not use sharp objects as there is a thermostatic temperature sensor wire in the vicinity of the ice-box.

Hi My GE Monogram Fridge isn't cooling very fast. It takes forever for it to get to 37 F. The freezer works fine. I have noticed frost build up in the fridge (not freezer) near the back (there is a vent...

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues, this does sound funny, but this is why your refrigerator side is warm, or not cooling.

Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
4. Defective Fan
5. Defective compartment inlet damper (on some models)

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Fridge is warm and freezer is cooler than normal

Possible bad defrost timer. Locate timer underneath the fridge and manually turn the knob. Element should come on and start defrosting. If defrosting starts then the timer is bad. Check also the element and thermostat.

Fridge getting warm, defost not properly working...

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
