It is a power supply regulator board problem. Same exact thing happened to my 27" Trinitron purchased in 1998. I tried all the rudamentary stuff that Sony had on their esupport page, but nothing worked. In our case, it went out while my daughter was watching it. I think the time has come to scrap it, and consider a different television, and I don't think I'll go with Sony this time. I hope the rest of you have better luck.
