Try connecting the drive to another computer.
OR
Try using RECUVA

It will even bring back files that have been deleted from your iPod, or by bugs, crashes and viruses!

  • Simple to use interface - just click 'Scan' and choose the files you want to recover
  • Easy to use filter for results based on file name/type
  • Simple Windows like interface with List and Tree view
  • Can be run from a USB thumb drive
  • Restores all types of files, office documents, images, video, music, email, anything.
  • Supports FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5 , NTFS + EFS file systems
  • Restores files from removable media (SmartMedia, Secure Digital, MemoryStick, Digital cameras, Floppy disks, Jazz Disks, Sony Memory Sticks, Compact Flash cards, Smart Media Cards, Secure Digital Cards, etc.)
  • Restores files from external ZIP drives, Firewire and USB Hard drives

SOURCE: external hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps

SOURCE: I don't have the disk

These are defective products, they are supposed to come with a CD that contains the file BounceBack_Express. I simply went to the store that I bought the product from, reported the problem and had an employee copy the file from a unit on their shelves on to a CD for me. I then used it to get a restore from the unit. However the Verbatim hard drive had deleted well over half the files I had backed up, why, I have no idea. I then promptly returned the product for a full refund. However, the damage had alreadt been done, this is a garbage product, with no support from their customer service department. There were a couple of sites you can down load this BounceBack_Express file from but the do not work with this unit.

What program do I use to open the backed up files?

What ever program you used to back up the files in the first place.

Did you use windows, or a different program ?

Are they stored on this
Verbatim 500GB USB Desktop 500 GB Hard Drive ?
When you use a program to backup a operating system, the program has the option to restore the system.

If you copied files onto another HDD, then you just copy them back.

You need to post what you used to do this.

I have a Verbatim Clon 500GB external hard drive which only holds 4.65 GB; why??

Windows 7Might not be formatted correctly. Check Disc Management under Administrative tools. This will give the true size including space that has not assigned as a partition.

Why i cant format my seagate 500gb potable hard drive, when format it in quick format its show an error that the hard drive not successfully formatted. what should i do? please help me, i need it asap....

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is "dying".
If the warranty still is valid, exercise the warranty to get it replaced, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, open the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, and take the disk-drive to a computer-store. Buy a new, compatible, drive, and then "transplant" it into the enclosure, to "revive" your external file-storage appliance.

I'm Windows XP... I can copy many files to the Verbatim. But when I try to copy a 1GB+ file, the copy craps out. I Googled and found some Microsoft problem when copying 1GB+ files to external drives, but...

The usual limit is exactly 2GB, not 1GB.
It's a limitation of the file-system used for the directory of the disk-drive, when formatted according to the 'FAT32' specifications.

So, copy all the files currently on the Verbatim to your disk-drive.
Then, "reformat" the external (not the "internal") disk-drive, using the 'NTFS' file-system. This file-system has a maximum-file-size limitation for one file that is _much_ larger than the capacity of your Verbatim.

Then, copy all the "saved" files back onto the Verbatim.

Finally, copy your "large" files onto the Verbatim.

I dropped 500gb verbatim external drive. It wants me to format the drive. How can i get the data back before i format it? Please help Thank you

Because the first few records stored on the disk-drive have been corrupted (or are physically unreadable), you get the "please format" message. Hopefully, the other 99.9 percent of the data-blocks stored on the disk-drive are OK.

Search online for 'data recovery' software -- it reads through the disk-drive, block-by-block, trying to merge blocks of data back into files that can be copied onto your 'C:' drive.

Cannot copy more than 4gb file on a 500gb external usb hard disk

You have to change your hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS,because FAT32 limits the size of transferred files to 4GB. To do so ,go to Start, right click on Computer and select Manage. Under Storage click on Management.Find your hard drive in the list and right click on it and select Format. Under File System change the Answer to NTFS and leave the Allocation Unit to default. Click on Perform Quick Format if you want.click OK and confirm your OK with losing all data on the drive, and your done.

I am trying to write files to a terabyte verbatim portable hard drive, but it saids the drive can not be modified. How do I write to the verbatim hard drive on my mac?

Hello,

Most verbatim drives are formatted to by default to NTFS which is a windows file system. NTFS can be read and copied from on Mac but not written to.

You will need to offload the data to one of your computers and reformat it with the mac.

Apple, Utilities, Disk Utility.

Once formatted for Mac you will be able to read and write to the drive but you will need to add macdisk to the windows PC to allow it to read and write to a Mac formatted disk.

I more information on my FAQ about recovering data from Mac drives on PC

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.
