Temperature of refrigerator rising

The refrigerator temp won't remain consistently at 34 degrees any longer. I have turned off refrigerator for 1-2 days and then turn back on. It works fine for about 10 days or so. Then the temperature in the refrigerator starts climbing again. However, the freezer works and stays at 0.

You have a defrost problem!!!the evaporator coil is getting covered with ice and the evap fan can't blow the cold air from the freezer into the fridge section, you could have a bad jazz board, the machine isn't going into defrost this is your problem send me the full model number,it should be up on the right hand side wall up near the ceiling in the fridge section,if you have the control up in the fridge section on the front top and it's digital saying like 4 and 4 you most likely have a bad jazz board,if so open the door or if you have french doors open the right door, hold the light switch in,press the down key three times, let go of the door or light switch, now press the button down again and you'll see like s and p or something like that then press it down again and it should go back to 4 and 4 shut the door and open the freezer, you just manually put the fridge into defrost, but if the compressor is still running and you'll hear it this is the easiest way to tell the jazz board is bad, after like 5 minutes you should hear the ice crackling if the board is good, that's the heater coming on melting the ice but send me the model number and i can help you out.

sorry you wrote it won't stay at 34 anymore so you most likely have a bad defrost thermostat, bad board or timer but if you melt it out and after 10 to 12 days it frosts up again you have a defrost problem.

that should be set at 37 and 0 in freezer

SOURCE: Freezer quits working

Solution Found! The problem is when the temperature surrounding the refrigerator in the garage falls to < 45 degrees, the thermostat regulating the refrigerator will not call for the compressor to kick in to provide cooling (it's temperature requirements are being met). Since there is no demand, the compressor will not cycle, which is how the freezer is kept cold, and the freezer eventually warms up to match the refrigerator temperature. Frigidaire makes a "Cold Kit" that I ordered and installed from RepairClinic.com for $22 (Item #: 1037646; Description: Garage kit). It's basically a strip heater that runs off the control power to warm the thermostat and causes the compressor to cycle once to twice a day to keep the freezer frozen. After installation, the refrigerator stays at 40-45 and the freezer stays around 0 degrees.

SOURCE: PTS25LBM GE Profile Defrost cycle messed up

The GE Profile Refrigerator has circuit boards and sensors are in the freezer that sends a signal to the circuit board to begin and end the defrost cycle. It is very possible the sensor or the circuit board are defective and will need replaced. I will help you solve this if you like. This refrigerator is complex and will take more discussion with you to complete the repair, I am here to help, let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Hi, I have a GE

Hi Mark and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Touch the front of the unit where the doors close and feel if it is very very warm to the touch. If it is very warm to the touch... here are the prime suspects:
1. condenser coils covered in lint
2. condenser fan not running or running slow.

An easy way to determine if there is a condenser fan or coil fan problem is to simply direct a floor fan at the base if the refrigerator. If it cools down substantially in an hour.... there is a problem with the coils being clogged or the condenser fan not running. If that makes no difference... before opening the back of the unit... inspect the back wall of the freezer compartment for any signs of ice build up. If you see ice-build up.... unplug the unit.. remove freezer contents and direct that fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. Then return the unit to normal service.... If the temps come down to normal... for 2 - 3 days then start creeping up again... you have an automatic defrosting problem.

Forgot to mention... make sure the evaporator fan is running at full speed.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Hi,

How long does this temperature issue last? When you notice this issue how long does this sit at the hire temp, 1 hour? I am trying to understand why Heartland/Marvel would ask you to turn it off. Please let me know. Thanks

Fridge not cold enough

The higher the number the colder the temp is supposed to be.

In order to prevent the formation of bacteria and other such organisms to affect food the way it does, the ideal temperature range of refrigerators has been mentioned here. Before we look at these settings, it is important to know the format in which temperatures are represented within a refrigerator. Commonly, you will notice a dial representing the figures 1-5 or 1-9 in the refrigerator, and a dial representing the letters A-E in the freezer. The ideal setting is usually in the middle of such figures.

If the dial is in such a format in your refrigerator, try a setting at 3 if the range is 1-5, and at 4 if the range is 1-9. For the freezer, a setting at C is suitable.

The ideal temperature in the refrigerator ranges between 34 degrees F - 38 degrees F or 1 degrees C - 3 degrees C. So that foods such as vegetables and fruits remain fresh and crisp, the temperature may be set around 38 degrees F or 3 degrees C.
The ideal temperature in the freezer ranges around 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) or lower.

Freezer turns of in cold weather

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.

Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.

If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.

Good luck!

Hi,
Yes... if you are just seeing the temp. rise intermittently then it is related to the defrosting of the coil... a necessary evil that needs to be done periodically...

As long as the temps. drop again and do not stay up long term... (over 40 minutes) I would not get alarmed...

aHi,
You need to check the following to make sure your fridge is working properly:
Vent blockage - Air flows between the freezer and refrigerator sections to provide proper cooling via air vents.
Condenser coil - When the condenser coil is dirty it causes the sealed system to overheat and therefore the refrigerator will not cool properly.
Defrost Cycle - When the refrigerator goes into defrost, the cooling mode stops and a defrost heater energizes to remove accumulated frost from the evaporator (cooling) coil, which causes the freezer temperature to rise slightly.
Proper Air Circulation - Refrigerators require a specific amount of clearance around the cabinet to allow for air circulation. If the refrigerator does not have the minimum clearance required, the refrigerator cannot cool properly.
Hope this helps.

Re: Tempurature Problems

The thermostat is likely failing intermittently, or the defrost timer could be failing.

Both parts can be tested (and should have been) by the repairman.

The defrost timer turns on and off to let the coils defrost - but if it stays off - can cause the rise in temperature. The thermostat, however, reports the temperature to the timer, so either (or both) could be to blame.

Have them tested.
